Jeezus am I glad no one here thought Summertime was a Big Brother & The Holding Co. original....
Or...better yet...a Janis song... LOL
Egg
Love Sculpture (Dave Edmunds' band in the 60's) did a pretty good version of the song. Rest of the LP (Blues Helping) were blues covers like Shake Your Hips!
Cool video.
"Summertime" is indeed a classic. The first version I ever heard was Sam Cooke's, which still is one of my favorites. Janis Joplin (with Big Brother & The Holding Company) probably did the nmost famous takes. Back in the mid '60s practically every working garage band in Oklahoma City did "Summertime" for a slow dance.
The Zombies do a great version of Summertime, but it is not thier song, nor is it Ricky Nelson's. It was written by composer George Gershwin for the opera Porgy and Bess in the 1930s and has since been recorded by over 2500 artists. Wikipedia sez: "Summertime is the name of an aria composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin, and the song soon became a popular jazz standard. Gershwin is said to have based this song on a Ukrainian lullaby, Oi Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon (A Dream Passes By The Windows), which he heard in a New York City performance by Oleksander Koshetz’s Ukrainian National Chorus. Gershwin began composing the song in December 1933, attempting to create his own spiritual in the style of the African American folk music of the period. It is sung multiple times throughout Porgy and Bess, first by Clara in Act I as a lullaby and soon after as counterpoint to the craps game scene, in Act II in a reprise by Clara, and in Act III by Bess, singing to Clara's baby." 1945 version from the film Rhapsody in Blue:
Interesting. You can hear the same riff in Astral Plane by the Modern Lovers as well.

Dig this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Band_(video_game)What's a Rock Band game?
Not sure if this is old news (even news), but I was playin' Rock Band at my brother's the other day and noticed that holy shit, the Konks song "29 Fingers" was on the game! Kinda cool considerin' most of the tunes on that game can suck...now if some one would put out a Sonics Rock Band game...at least I can dream
Name your top 3 gigs you have attended...either local, or international acts...in the punk/new wave/garage genre.
I'm using an Ampeg Scrambler reissue. It's the only fuzz that I've found that can keep the lows going for bass ('75 P-Bass through a Sunn Sonara). Fat,fat sound that doesn't wash out!
Any other bass players getting awesome fuzz?
Ping lets you check off the sites that you want updated (I post to Twitter, Plurk, Facebook and my personal Myspace page), and you can choose micro-blog or update for any post. Actually, Twitter and Plurk are considered "updates" instead of micro-blogs. At least with my set-up. It took a couple tries to get it right. Then I installed the Ping.fm widget for the iGoogle page, and post from there!
Combine that widget and the "BeTwittered" widget on iGoogle and yer set!
So you figured out how to post to both thru Ping.fm? How d'ya do it?
Actually, I like Plurk better! Even though I post pretty much the same exact nonsense on both, thanks to Ping.fm.
My review of The Future is Unwritten and a new Claqsh concert DVD is HERE
Saw the documentary on Arthur Lee and Love titled "Love Story" made by Chris Hall. It wasn't bad, but I couldn't help feeling it could have been better. On the plus side it features Lee and Bryan MacLean shortly before their deaths, but on the minus side there's very little in the way of old videos or TV appearances. I thought a lot more of that would have enhanced the film greatly.
Nevertheless, the majority of the storytelling comes from guitarist Johnny Echols who comes across as very wise and lucid. Bryan MacLean had a very young and enthusiastic approach in his storytelling that's almost eccentric, as engaging as it is.
Some of the best stories come from Elektra founder Jac Holzman, telling the tale of Lee taking off with the band's advance money and returning an hour later with a brand new car, and giving the change to the rest of the band to split between themselves. Not funny, but very telling.
The movie is very heavy on "Forever Changes" and the making of the album, understandably so, and even goes a little bit into the "Four Sail" band, but doesn't delve much into any other post-FC records under the name Love or the Arthur Lee solo efforts (like "Vindicator").
Even if you're not a Love fan you'll find this movie interesting, and I can see this playing on IFC by the end of the year. The film screened at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, introduced by Domenic Priore, and sadly only thirty-fifty people were in attendance.
no -trash is a good fit for it. Been fighting with some dead spots but it sounds great -running through a black cat fuzz and a fender twin
We use lots of reverb both live and in recording. We have a vintage 70's PA with some very since built in verb. Also - we sometimes turn the gain all the way up on the vocal channel, and turn the volume down to add a little crunch. You can also sing through a head phone speaker.
I like to put just a tiny bit of delay on my vocals.

Guitarist Matthew Odietus of the legendary punk band THE CANDY SNATCHERS died on June 28 in his hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia. An official cause of death has not yet been released. Taking their name from an obscure, bizarre, and trashy 70's horror flick late one night after drinking heavily, THE CANDY SNATCHERS formed in 1992. According to a November 2006 write-up on ToeStubber.com, "the band's tried-and-true array of destructive gimmicks kept the bookers guessing. Depending on mood, singer Larry May or axer Matt Odietus would sometimes cut their own scalp, '70s pro-wrestler style — up by the hairline or wherever the blood would flow most effusively. Once, at CBGB, Matt bled out so much he almost fainted, and eventually had to be carted off to the ER with a t-shirt turban wrapped around his noggin. Larry would smash glass bottles at random. Willy used lighter fluid to set his bass on fire, with the aid of excited audience members who’d often get outta hand with the flammables and torch Willy himself. Drums were routinely collided with and obliterated." In November 2006, Matt spent 17 days in jail. When asked how long he had been out a short time after he was released, he said, "four scores and seven eight balls ago they let me out," and "went on to tell of the good times he had, friends he had made, the free food, and needed rest he got," according to the band's MySpace page. http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.Net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=99980
Equal parts early Blue Oyster Cult and 1970s comedy records (Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Steve Martin.) Just the mood I'm in right now, though I've recently discovered Chachi on Acid.
