IT WILL HAVE BEEN ONE YEAR , TOMORROW (1/17) SINCE KEVIN JUNIOR (nee Kevin Gerber.) CHECKED OUT OF THIS LIFE. Now , a lot of people who were probably closer to him than I was , only recall the bad times.... It's true .Kevin presented himself as a junk - free variation on the Thunders/Keef aesthetic. The junk would come much later , unfortunately. The identity of the person or people who first "Turned him on" has been disclosed , in private , though without any proof. The point is , this was a very enthusiastic, hilarious , prolific, creative individual who was very well liked , and could have gone on to bigger things (If , as John Doe noted , critics bought records. ).
I met Kevin at the first Mystery Girls show , in 1987 , when he was only about 18. I hit it off with he and the rest of the band quickly , and became closely associated with the band. I DID SOME FLYERS , CARTOONS FOR THEIR PRESS KIT , OPENED A COUPLE OF SHOWS , AND DID GUEST SPOTS , SINGING. The Mystery Girls , with a toxic blend of Thunders , Mott , Stones , Hanoi Rocks . Faces , Groovies , MC5 and Stooges mojo were guaranteed little more than cult status in Chicago , never mind the US. Concurrently , Liz Phair and Veruca Salt each playyed six gigs and got signed to the majors. Talentless but self-obsessed egomaniac , Billy Corgan , was planning his next move ,,, to be a huge star , so he could complain about it , immediately following. Great bands like The Mystery Girls , Lava Sutra , The Greaseballs , Oncoming Traffic and The Waste Kings have gone largely unknown or forgotten , while some of our worst bands are now "Legends"....
WHAT IS'NT OFTEN NOTED , Is Kevin and Mystery Girls drummer , Scott Giampino , did a stretch as GG ALLIN'S BACKING BAND , THE TOILET ROCKERS. While incarcerated , Allin told Kevin he was contemplating doing a straight Rock show , no body fluids , no violence , just the wild , but less nightmarish kind of show he did , long ago.....But , GG's sentence was extended, and he emerged , mad as hell. Recording and performing plans with The Mystery Girls were shit - canned , tho' the two camps remained friendly.....I'm told. Of course , Kevin went on to bigger things , and could have gone on to bigger things , yet , with The Chamber Strings , an extension of the sound of the later Mystery Girls ,who'd changed their name to Rose Hips, before finally splitting up , after nearly 10 years ,two CDs, two singles , a cassette EP, blowing their hero , Thunders , off the stage , and having a fucking good time.
The better - recieved Chambers Strings , combining the semi - acoustic strains of The Rose Hips , Johnny and Keef acoustic , and Kevin Junior's then - bandmates , Epic Soundtracks and Nikki Sudden, had pockets of fans all over the world. But , Kevin's then - undisclosed drug use , and subsequent open heart surgery , would suggest that he'd squandered it all , a little - known jail sentence and other factors led him to make peace with the Chambers Strings. After five years of living out his private Hell in California , the band reformed , but things were not well , and a second chance at the brass ring was lost. Kevin relocated to his native Akron , and started a new Chambers Strings , but , time soon ran out.
Last time I saw Kevin Junior alive , he was involved in a Kinks' "Preservation Society" tribute show. We were each glad to see the other. I did'nt see Kevin much during his dark ages , and that's the man most people remember. I don't.
