    • This is pretty cool. Sounds like a cross between 60's Garage Punk and 70's Pub Rock with a touch of New York Dolls.

    • From Sue Weigand, friend and former employee at Star Records : "This is a public service announcement... with guitars!": Mike "Star" was finally brought home from Cuba and laid to rest today, in a private ceremony for a small group of family and friends. For those family & friends & customers not in attendance, a dozen roses represented your friendship, in Star Records' main colour yellow. Mike's favourite rock'n'roll was represented by The Clash "Know Your Rights" (quoted above) and Mike's Star Records label was represented by Forgotten Rebels "This Ain't Hollywood." The roses and the pins were buried with Mike. ♡ Stay tuned here in the coming months for info about a memorial tribute concert to which everyone will be invited.

Mike ran Star Records (the store, one of THE best record stores in the world) in Oshawa Ontario, the Star Club (also in Oshawa and some of the best 80's garage bands played here, it's even mentioned in Sweat, The Fleshtones book) and also the Star Records label (Forgotten Rebels, Durango 95, Purple Toads, Ben Vaughn, The Cynics, Lyres, The Creeps and so many more).

The Great Lakes Surf Battle is an annual festival that takes place in Toronto during the first weekend of June. Focusing on instrumental surf rock, the goal of the GLSB is to unite surf bands from various parts of the world.

Great Lakes Surf BattleThe festival was created in 2006 by Blue Demon and Dano Villano as a means of celebrating the arrival of Tiki Tena from California. Tena had been well known on the surf music scene as a promoter of surf shows and strong supporter of the genre. The two day festival initially took place at local venues such as the Smilin' Buddha, Mitzi's Sister, and Rancho Relaxo before making the Cadillac Lounge its permanent venue for the two main nights of music.

The GLSB has hosted more than 40 instrumental surf bands from all over North America during the course of a decade. Occasionally, bands from the garage rock, rockabilly, and punk genres have been added to the bill as the "token non-surf band." Local rock'n roll dj's, burlesque dancers, sideshow acts, MC's, and other personalities have also been featured as part of the weekend festivities. Along with after parties at the Oasis Aqualounge and various "undisclosed locations", the Great Lakes Surf Battle has become a fixture on the Toronto music scene.

Awards given to the bands involved in the battle include the Surf Battle Cup winners for nights 1 and 2. The Freaky Tiki Cup is given to the winners of the final Sunday afternoon contest. The mysterious Cthulhu Cup is given out at random based on unknown criteria. Prizes have also been awarded to concert goers who participate in beach themed contests for best bikini, best dressed lady, or wildest Hawaiian shirt. The GLSB also features vendors that specialize in unique jewelry, clothing, and crafts.

Other events affiliated with the GLSB include the upcoming Fall Brawl plus more TBA.

And we will be broadcasting the event live on www.surfrockradio.com

      Rock n Roll!!

    • October 23, 2014 11:35 AM CDT
    • Sunday Nov 2/2014 3 till 7PM ET at APK in sleepy London Ontario Canada, it's the return of The Boy From Nowhere and The Mongrels to our monthly Rock'n'Roll Rent Party.

The Boy From Nowhere were around from about 1984 till 1990, releasing nothing, but appearing on a couple of What Wave compilation cassettes and one song on Thee Cave Comes Alive on Action Records out of Greece.

      http://chrwradio.com/lma/2004/Thee%20Cave%20Comes%20Alive%20-%20Songs%20From%20The%20Lost%20What%20Wave%20Fanzine%20Tapes/Boy%20From%20Nowhere%20-%20Heart%20Full%20Of%20Soul.mp3

The Mongrels are the only pubrock'n'roll combo around this area, and cover tunes by everyone from: Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Chambers Brothers, Byrds, Ugly Ducklings, Ramones, Steve Earle, Love, Drive By Truckers and loads more! Even some Captain Beefheart as the video link below proves:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqneBEZ164U

No cover, we pass the hat around sometime during the show and it's early enough that you can make it to the salt mines next morn, so comeon out and have some fun with 2 amazing bands!!

    • Yep, coupla things happening in sleepy London Ontario Canada that may interest hideout regulars:

Friday Sept 6th APK in downtown sleepy London Ontario. The Boy From Nowhere return. Mid 80's garagepunk/blues/rock'n'roll combo from London Ontario are a little older, maybe wiser, but they've still got their rock'n'roll hearts in the right places. Pretty well all covers is their forte, so you may hear tunes by: Dictators, DMZ, Yardbirds, Teenage Head, MC5, Shadows Of Knight along with some Elvis and blues tunes mixed in. Always a fun time as you shake your ass to help the beers go down quicker.

Here they are doing a version of Heart Full Of Soul from Thee Cave Comes Alive LP on Action Records outta Greece.

      http://chrwradio.com/lma/2004/Thee%20Cave%20Comes%20Alive%20-%20Songs%20From%20The%20Lost%20What%20Wave%20Fanzine%20Tapes/Boy%20From%20Nowhere%20-%20Heart%20Full%20Of%20Soul.mp3

And we'll also have these characters on CHRW's Radio What Wave on Thursday Sept 4 at 6PM ET for a possible live to air acoustic type of thing....last time they came in they played some Kinks and Real Kids as well as some Flamin' Groovies. Nothing planned so we'll go by the seat of our pants and ride this thing till we fall off.

And on Saturday Sept 6th The Boy From Nowhere will be part of a day long celebration of a former bar/shithole called The Brunswick, home to many a London band over the years. Also home to a wicked smell that wouldn't go away until the place was finally torched. Now it's not even a hole in the ground. This event is also happening at the APK in sleepy London Ontario. Other bands slated to play included Duke Sedan and The Hi-Tones (pure 50's rockabilly) and loads of other drunks. It'll be a party to remember if you're in any shape to remember! Here's a facebook link:

And then on Sunday Sept 7th, it's our monthly Rock'n'Roll Rent Party. And once again it's at the APK here in sleepy London Ontario. London's only pub rock band, The Mongrels are the resident band and this time the guests are Westminster Park, local duo who have released a couple of LP's (yep, vinyl) over the course of the last few years. This event starts at 3PM in the afternoon and runs until 7PM so you can recover enough to go back to work the next day. And local pain in the ass whatwave dave is the MC for this event, but don't let that keep you away. Here's a facebook link for the event:

      https://www.facebook.com/events/831529983554497/

If you're from the hideout and come to any of these events, be sure to come up and say HEY!

    • Not at all. The thing about Lava Sutra , their shows were always different. Of course , they had standout songs that they regularly performed , but they'd throw you for a loop with as much regularity. They did a great , long overdue , version of "The Edge of Reality by (Psyched)Elvis , with a free form freakout at the end....When they regrouped , after Dan's departure , they started doing the Moving Sidewalks' version of "I wANNA hOLD yOUR hAND"....iT'S ONE OF THE FEW THINGS ON THEM YOU CAN FIND ON yOU tUBE.

But , when they did what turned out to be their last show , they did this stunning medley of "See Emily Play " and "Interstellar Overdrive", wih ALL the embellishments . eVERY LITTLE TWEAK IN PLACE.

But , they announced that that was it. Their CD was finally out , and they celebrated by retiring from performing together. They never cited a reason , tehy just said , let's go out with a bang , but , they neve really officially broke up , and , as I say , honored me by appearing on my tribute CD (wHICH i HAD no KNOWLEDGE OF , hONEST.), THEN , TWO - THIRDS OF TEH MK2 LINEUP JOINED tHE cHAMBERS sTRINGS. tWICE . Long story.    have a good weekend. John.
