I have, like probably many in here, a hell of a lot of bad experiences with sound guys and sound checks. For me, a sound check CAN be useful, but 90% of the time it's a major waste of time. I'm more concerned about the order of appearance, where's are shit! and when do we get on. You can have a pretty good impression of the kind of sound guy you are gonna deal with just by looking at his t-shirt. If it's a RUSH t-shirt... you're in for trouble. We used to have all kindsa remarks on our equipement being shitty and mot tuned and shit... but none of this matters as it's the performance that's important... not the sound man's job, for me at least.
I've known a couple great sound guys in my town and would sigh of relief when I got to the club and saw them. I thought to myself "great! easy night!"... as when I didn't know the guy and he was clearly into reggae... I knew we'd have troubles. I'm always asked to keep the amps on stage low so that he could have "room" to play with them on his console... but come show time... I jack my amp right back up. Then, you're in control, he can't do anything else but cut the mics.
Lastly, I always sacrifice our first song. I pick one that's ok, but not killer. Usually it goes to shit because of the sound man. Then jack up your amps and start playing for real. It's fucking funny to see the guy jump on his console, head down, trying to rectify what's going "wrong".
Fuck these stupid gimmicks. They're just trying to sell more guitars with these stupid contraptions.
My guess would be also Bill Haley. But I could be wrong cause it kinda sounds like a standard that could've been done in the 40's.

I think a lot of it depends on what kind of music you like and what kind of music you want to play.
I like things VERY simple: I look for a 1 chord, then a 4 chord then a 5 chord and I play that. I generally like to have it go verse chorus verse chorus solo (which is just played over another verse and chorus) and then a final verse chorus.
It's not original at all, but I find that by using this structure you can really let you personality shine through in the way you actually play and sing your songs.
I think it's really easy to write lyrics about women, so I usually start with that then take what I like from the lyrics and alter the rest a bit so it isn't really about a woman anymore. I think it's okay to have about 98% of your songs be about love intrests and broken hearts and all that, but it's good to have one or two songs that aren't.
usually, i just don't think, i must be in a good mood or in veery bad mood.. then it works, i catch the guitar began to play nothing, and in 10 minutes or so i got a song. other times i'm totally sick over a band or song and i really want to do something like that, but still.. i do the same, i always do the same because i don't know nothing about composing techniques or play lots of covers.. so if i rip off, it's without bad intentions, i hate to play songs of others, i like to write songs, not to play other songs.
my principal problem is that i must be excited with the music i'm listening at the time, music that makes me want to do something as good as that..if not, bad problem.. i don't care a lot, always the same, and write bad songs that i will throw to the garbage.
play in your own way.. i like to use chords from everywhere, they help me lot better to write songs since i use an acoustic guitar (i play in my band bass and sing, but compose near everything on acoustic guitar)

By the way, about the Damned...are you kidding me? I play without any tom, hi-hat, and sometimes without bassdrum too....though this is not exactly the drumset of my dreams! Well I like it at the end of the video by the way.
Just yesterday I saw a wonderful Pearl from the mid 1960s, this guy bought it for something like 50€...I couldn't believe it!
The other nice thing is when the kickdrum has "no holes" for toms, and eventually use a snaredrum "holder" (shit I'm sorry I don't know the English name, I hope you can understand me)

Gina Vah - Hi! Yeah ~ I bought my Gretsch as my first kit, too. I love it, but I've been saving money for a while now to get a new kit. I was just curious about what other drummers play. All the musicians that I have ever known have a favorite brand or style of their instrument that they prefer (ex. the lead guitarist of my band loves fenders, while the rythm guitarist loves gibsons ). I bought some years ago a Gretsch Catalina, because it had a good price, I am poor, and it wasn't that bad. In that period I liked the 20" kickdrum, but after a while I wished I had a bigger one, at least with a hole on it. Since I'm poor I'll keep my old one, but I agree, and understand your feeling! Otherwise you can play as I do with Alfredo Garcia and His Bikini Voodoo Drums, that is take it away directly, and just play snaredrum-floortom-cymbal (ride). Eventually standing. In the 50s it was all, as everyone is saying, flat wound strings, very heavy gage.
Those do have that sort of plonking sound you hear on records from that era but are hard to play and might even warp the neck of a guitar without a real solid truss in it. Funny you should be talkin' about Harmony Rockets...I've had a SERIOUS jones for onr of those lately. Right now, I have a Hagstrom Swede and a really solid LP Junior copy (Japanese).
