• Blue Steel seems to work well for my Strat and Tele ( light gage) I also use them on my acoustic. My biggest problem is my wammy on my strat, If I break a string it's instantly out of tune "Big time" :( It always freaks me out if it happens on stage.

I don't know what kind of strings the old guitars had but I know some of the amps were lower in wattage (volume) and alot of bands thought distortion was cheap sounding. I remember reading somewhere that some guitar players would actually cut a little into their speakers so it would vibrate and make a distortion sound. The speakers seemed to be paper like more so then todays speakers.

P.S. I know a great string (New but broke in) seems to have more sustain than dull worn out strings. They may have rubbed something on them at the factory as to protect them from tarnishing etc. so that way the strings may have had a duller sound. One time I had a set of strings that had too much sustain and I rubbed wax on them and it seemed to dull their sound

• Personally I'm thinking of changing guage too

I play of an epiphone '56 gold top lespaul (P90s)

it's strung with ernie ball regular slinkies (10s)

and i'm thinking of going over to Ernie Ball Power Slinkies which have the 1st three strings a little thicker

do you guys think that this will beef up the higher notes? I'm trying to play stuff like Fell in Love with a Girl and Have Love Will Travel and I think that the 1st 3 strings could be louder and just have more tone or whatever

thanks, g

• Hey there
I played in a lot of bands, and played on a lot of different kits.

First: about the 24" Bassdrum... It's fun to play, but it can lack some punch when you play faster songs... You shouls also consider that with a 24" you need bigger toms as well, otherwise the contrast may be too big, and you don't have a good overall drumsound.
TUning a 24" can be a hassle too... And the skins are expensive, and not very durable...The right combination of the right skin (ambassador) and muffling (newspaper/pillow) could work.

I have played a long time with a 1971 Slingerland (Maple) with a 15" and 18" toms and 24" bassdrum... I used to play a lot of traditional instrumentals, and it sounded great in the studio, but once we played live trough bigger PA -systems it lost a lot of it's appeal. I still use it for small clubs...
When you go for a 24" BD see what kind of beater you prefer... I used a soft beater.

I found a 1965 ludwig too, and I still enjoy playing that one. It has a 20" bassdrum, but men, it's so crisp !!!!
The advantage is you don't have to play LOUD to be heard.

Decide on your budget, and go try different drums. Just see what feels good, and listen to the drums.
VIntage is great, but I think some of those old drums are to beautifull to be abused the whole time =)

The new ludwigs are great sounding, and you can order to your specifics.;
Personally I don' t like pearl or tama... It's too bland for me.
Yamaha has some great wooden kits who aren't very expensive, so that might be worth checking out.

I'd say: try a 20" BD, but see if you can find one who's longer!!!! You might be surprised...

Good luck!

• Ciao! For me the best drumkit are LUDWIG fab four model wit 22" bassdrum I have 2 kits, one black oyster and one silver sparkle... and i LOVE them, i would never change (i tried with Gretsch and other brands but i don't like them very much)..they are top quality in materials and beautiful outfits. You can have a look there! www.myspace.com/thehangeev If i would have much more money i would buy also the white pearl version and the gold sparkle. They are reissues, but, trust me, i used to have before a 60's drum, Hollywood Meazzi, that was great in looking while sound sucked! (old wood, pretty damaged) ;-) Ludwig rules!

• What kind of damage? It's a black headstock with 3 letters inlaid, and no flowery stuff right?
On my black headstock guitars (and most of the others I have seen), there is shitloads of lacquer over the logo, and they can go quite bubbly, brown, and ugly with time (as the varnish seems to become detached from the inlay). My Starstream's headstock looks like the elephant man, but it's totally natural so I'm not overly bothered.

• Hey Guys
I have a 67 Vox Apollo guitar (made in Italy) and the vox logo is damaged due to a house fire I had years ago. It sort of started to melt the headstock and damaged the letters. If anyone knows where I can get a parted out kneck to replace those letters please let me know! I would really appreciate it!

I want to thank all my music lovers for supporting me these last 3 months with your Wonderful heartfelt letters praying for my speedy recoveryas I battle this demon that Attacks so many other friends and their loved ones. So for now, no touring for a while.... I have rectal cancer....
I had to undergo 6 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation every day, Monday through Friday. Now I have rested and healed another 6 weeks from the Radiation and Chemotherapy.
April 4, 2008 my surgeon Dr Hoffman and 2 other surgeons will cut out the tumor at Cedars - Sinai Medical Center Hospital in Hollywood, Ca. I will have chemo afterwards to finish up.
Then I will kick back and heal…. Then I will go back into reconstructive surgery and more Chemo.
Then go to Hawaii and surf....
I again, thank all of you from my deep within and promise me, keep smiling…. D

I was lucky to have the chance to see him twice already but I would be bummed to never see him again.
Keep him in your thoughts. If it wasn’t for him there would be no “Reverb Tank” group…

ALL HAIL KING OF THE SURF GUITAR!!!

• Never read Ronnie's bio, but I've heard it's pretty good. I may be wrong, but I think it's out of print already.

The bio I read was by Mark Ribowsky. I don't have my copy on me (it's one of my most borrowed books) but I know that it was originally written well before the infamous trial, and was recently added extra chapters.

• i seen the cramps a few back, old as hell and lux still tore the place up like no other band i ever seen. he was all over the place breakin crap chuggin a bottle of vodka, climbin speakers. supa sleeze bad ass. reverend horton heat, ah not the craziest but one of the sickest guitar players i ever seen. him and his bass player did a solo where they were both had one hand on the guitar and the stand up bass. but dead boys would most definitely put them all to shame. come on who else randomly throws crap out in the middle of their show like "we're only doin it for the money" and "throw your pussies at me" ha that right suckas
