As I'm sure most of you have heard by now, Nick Curran passed away on Oct. 6 at the age of 35 after a long battle with oral cancer. I just thought he deserved a remembrance thread here on the Hideout honoring him and his great music. RIP, Nick.

Here's one of my favorite live clips of him going absolutely wild at a show in Milan, Italy:

I hate to admit , I never really followed him  , because the local Rockabilly chicks dig him so well. Generally , I don't share their opinions on latter - day Rock / Blues / Billy acts.

This takes absolutely NOTHING away from the sadness of his passing , please understand me when I say that . It's humbling to think that an Artist , or anyone for that matter , had to be taken so early in life. There is no rhyme or reason , the way I see it.

Danny Amis , however , is an inspiration to anyone who may think that it's hopeless.

It is'nt , but , it affects others in different way. Again , no rhyme or reason , except that we WILL see more people kick Cancer flat on it's ass in the future. Believe what you may , but , please believe that.

This sucks. I was so excited a few years back when I discovered Nick Curran's music. It was EXACTLY what I was searching for. I pretty much live under a rock and did not know that he had passed.

A couple of years ago, Russ Gordon, who produces lots of free summer shows in Los Alamos, N.M. told me that he was bringing in a performer to Los Alamos he knew I'd love  -- Nick Curran.

As frequently is the case, Russ was right. I listened to a couple of sound clips from Curran's then-current album Reform School Girl. It became my favorite album of the year.

But I missed the Los Alamos show -- which I regret even more now.

When I first hear Curran, I assumed he was older. His raw voice sounded like he had decades of hard living. But indeed, he packed a lot of life into his short time here. I mean, hell, he started out as a teenager playing in Ronnie Dawson's road band.

Here's my review of Reform School Girl

      Here's some more videos:

Everything Joe said above is totally true!!  When i got that Reform School CD it BLEW my mind...this guy had the perfect late 50's guitar tone, great selection of songs and musical styles (all in the late 50's/early 60's mode) and those screams remind me so much of Little Richard!! I love screamers!! And there's so few good ones and it's such a shame we lost one of the best at such a young age!! Just a kid!!

I only own Reform School Girl, his most recent release, but that record alone is more than enough to convince anyone what incredible talent this guy had, and what the rock 'n roll community has lost.
