    • You're asking the wrong person.....Because I will BORE the Hell out of you with my wealth of useless information.....

JOE BARBARA , OF HANNA - BARBARA , was Vince Taylor's Brother - in - Law . He bankrolled his career on early Huckleberry Hound profits. I always thought JET SCREAMER , the teen - Rock ; n'Roll Idol from "The Jetsons" was based partly on Conrad Birdie and partly on Vince Taylor(The over- the - top campiness in his voice - BAYBEH BAYBEH BAYBEH ! OH OH OH !). Actually , I believe Birdie's character was ripped more from Taylor than Presley........And , who was ready to forsake ol' Alfred E. Neuman with JFK's hair (Bobby Rydell.)  , like she would have given the latter a second glance in real life?

      Yep. "Ann Margrock".

So , The Flintstones had Rock Roll , singing "The Bedrock Twitch" .

Hi- Fi (Fred in disguise) - "Listen To The Mocking Bird".

Pebbles and Bam Bam - The Xian - themed "Let The Sun Shine In" (Covered , later , by VERY scary puppets on a Jimmy and Tammy  Faye  Baker LP.).

Hoagy Carmichael (In cartoon form) "Yabba Dabba Do"

The Golden Smog - Lame Beat /Trad Jazz . Fred SiTS IN on "When The Saints Go Marching IN".

THERE WAS A SWEDISH GROUP THAT DID A MOCK - SWEDISH "YABBA DABBA DO" song.

Fred and Barney led an international Boy Scouts' convention on "Old Macdonald" . Bound to offend someone.

That Shindig article must have mentioned "Shinrock!" The Flintstones ' parody of the still - current "Shindig ! " TV show , with host Jimmy O'Neil doing the voice - over for his own cartoon countenance , and introducing , yep , The Beau Brummelstones.

Pebbles and Bam Bam had their own Saturday Morning Cartoon show in the 70's , and they , and their teenage friends , had a band. Sally Struthers did the voice of Pebbles and sang all , or most of her parts on the songs.  Her Dad did'nt approve of her hanging out with "Dem Stone - Age weirdos".

The show was revived in the late 70's. There was one episode with the most pathetic KISS parody imaginable (Even moreso than KISS , themselves , today.) , called "The Cavemen". One had an orange afro , the other , green . One rolled his eyes , the other wiggled his ears. Fred and Barney are called in to impersonate the duo , singing their "Hit" , "We're gonna rock all day , we're gonna roll all night , we're the Cavemen , yeah ! Yeah! Yeah ! ALL RIGHT !".

Then , you had The Archies , Josie and The Pussycats , The Groovie Ghoulies , Fat Albert and THE Junkyard Band ,  Osmonds and Jackson 5 cartoons , Rick Springfield even had his own cartoon show "Mission Magic" , when he had one American hit under his belt , and barrel -scrapers like Butch Cassidy and The Sunset Kids , The Amazing Chan and The Chan Clan , The Brady Kids , PARTRIDGE FAMILY 2200 AD (No involvement from Shirley Jones or David Cassidy. Can you blame 'em?) , and so many others.....

Prior to that , The Beatles had their own cartoon show , and there was a funny animal band show , "The Beagles". Scooby Doo featured Jerry Reed , Davey Jones , Sonny and Cher and others , in cartoon form.....They also had a band called Tabatha and Adam and The Clowns , Samantha and Darren's offspring as young adults in a Rock group ( THERE WAS A BEWITCHED CROSSOVER ON "The Flintstones" , as well.). The Cattanooga Cats were a travelling, "Cat" Rock group in flashy 60's threads . They're notorious , today , for their song , "My Birthday Suit" . LOOK IT UP.

I can't think of any Cartoon bands that'd fall under the heading of "Garage Rock" , tho'....

But , after ice cream and Horror movies , cartoons are Roky's greatest passion. That's good enough for me.

    • Yes! It was puppets , not cartoons , but , no matter. IT WAS A THREE PIECE PUPPET BAND , THEY WERE BIRDS , AS I RECALL....ONE LOOKED LIKE LUX , ANOTHER LOOKED LIKE KID CONGO , BUT, THEY WERE'NT REALLY SUPPOSED TO BE THE CRAMPS. The Cramps were also on "Chic - A - Go - Go " in 1997 , being interviewed by the puppet host , Ratso. You can see that on You Tube.

    • I was just reading an article in Shindig about bands appearing on the Flinstones (of course they had to add the stone-age puns...Beau Brummelstones, Ann-Margrock) and it got me thinking about bands appearing on cartoon shows. Does anyone know of any other cartoons that actual bands have appeared on, or have a favorite moment?

I grew up on the Simpsons, so naturally my favorite moment is when the Ramones wish Mr. Burns a Happy Birthday...

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4KgVckgItw

I couldn't find the full clip in English, and the lines prior to and after the song are too great to skip, so here it is in Spanish, with translation provided below:

Smithers: Here are several fine young men who I'm sure are going to go far. Ladies and Gentlemen, The Ramones!

Joey: Hey, I'd just like to say this gig sucks!

      Johnny: Yeah, up yours Springfield

(Joey counts off, goes into song)

CJ: Go to hell, you old bastard.

Marky: Hey, I think they liked us!

Burns: Have the Rolling Stones killed.

Smithers: But sir, those aren't the-

      Burns: Do as I say!

    • thee oh sees are the band number one these days if we are talking about originality and pure and pure rock n roll spirit. maybe their last record isn't great (havent check it) but they release like 2-3 albums per year. so beat that haters

    • Sillies, this is definitely an April Fool's Day joke.  Also, The Oh Sees are totally unique and mega awesome, especially live.  They don't need a doofus like Kanye.

    • I had forgotten about this place(which is a shame, the discussion is a lot better than on a lot of other music boards).  Hope there's another Hideout Comp soon so I can submit a track from my band.

    • The eating ice cream in front of the TV and the short temper were the exactly the same things that Entertainment Weekly picked up when the did a review in this latest issue.

I think the hair and clothes are fitting.  It jumps around a bit in the trailer so it's hard to tell for sure if the years match but I'm gonna guess that David Chase paid a little more attention than most when it came to detail.  Can't say anything about the sound yet of course, but gear looks OK too.

I just saw it and liked it.  Of course, I'm biased because I like David Chase for "The Sopranos" and Little Steven for you-know-what.  Don't know how anyone else here will react if they check it out.  The ending was weird and kind of sad, but I still liked it.

I saw shades of Tony Soprano in James Gandolfini's character, i.e. whenever he lost his temper, when he ate ice cream while watching TV, and when he worked the grill during a birthday barbecue.  One big difference was that his standard of living was a lot more modest than Tony's.  His wife in this movie reminded me of Tony's mother, i.e. really fucked in the head.

BTW, I thought Bella Heathcote was really cute, and the little sister of the band's lead singer blossomed quite nicely at the end.

I'll leave it up to everyone else to debate the authenticity of the band's clothing, hair styles, gear, and sound, along with the song choices for the soundtrack.

    • Ice Pick is (was...just closed recently even though have had a few benefit shows to try to keep it open) one of the oldest punk venues in the country.  This side of the state is always an after thought.....most bands play Detroit or the college towns of Lansing, Ann Arbor or K-Zoo and maybe.....will make it this far west if they had time or needed some extra cash on their way to South Bend or Chicago. Probably some of the well knows who actually made it through were MDC, DOA, and Black Flag.  Lot of local stuff.....Jim Jones and the Kool-Aid Kids.  It was fun for us small town kids to go there.  Most people from my little town that went there regularly ended up moving to NY or Chicago after High School...so it had an impact.

    • Even though it is an old post, we can still keep the discussion going.

I have been playing shows in Michigan for years, and I remember the Reptile House. I never played there because I was on the other side of the state and I just couldn't get a show lined up there before they closed. But I heard good things about that place, which, for a small punk club three hours away, is pretty impressive that the good news was traveling across the state like that.

I've never heard of the Ice Pick, but like I said, I wasn't anywhere near that side of the state (I was always around the Detroit area).

    • I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I'll never see The Sonics. I mean , it's not like I live in a big city with lots of music venues , just Chicago.   Of course , they could fill one of our larger clubs , no problem , and while I don't know what their price , plus expenses , is , I don't think anybody wants to make it . I hope to Hell I'm wrong.

    • I can't stand old bands getting back together. A few exceptions (urinals, sonics, monks), but generally it's just a sad attempt to make a few bucks in the autumn years. S'ry.

    • Yes , my son. How long has it been since you've been to confession?   Take this chocolate chip cookie , for it is my body....Take this vitamin D milk , for it is my blood . You are to send me at least 5 rare Garage 45s as your absolution , or , just make peace with the idea that , hey , we don't have to agree on everything. Maybe we all have "Guilty " dislikes as well as likes.  Though I love it , I could readily imagine not all fans of this stuff liking Randy Alvey and The Green Fuz' signature tune. I mean , come on  . It sounds like it was recorded in a mineshaft , on tape that intentionally had small chunks of coal imbedded in it. UNO MAS , I love The song, I love The Cramps' version , I even find The Seclusions' Disco - delic version amusing. But , I did see The Green Fuz AT THE PONDEROSA STOMP , AND THEY WERE TERRIBLE. Wanted to love it.......

    • Yeah -- that was A) really f'in' stupid (misses a great band and what? They paid for it, right?) and B) it was an awesome performance by the one and only Daddy-O Grande.

Hanging is too good for those people. *huff*

    • I've seen that, it's a bloody good film. Dave, of Chas and Dave fame, worked with Joe Meek.

      John Battles said:

Yeah , The Outlaws were Richie Blackmore's early band. They cut some raving vocal rockers and cool instrumentals , but , I guess you know that already , and they backed Gene Vincent...I think some of the other members , besides Blackmore , were in Screaming Lord Sutch and The SAVAGES  TOO. They're in the movie "Live it Up" with Vincent , Heinz , and even Steve Marriott (AS A DRUMMER!!!!)  . They're dealt with , in passing in "Telstar" , the Meek biopic.

    • I love that book. You just made me take it off my shelf and look at it again for the first time in a couple of years.

I love seeing how old songs like this mutate and evolve. Another one like that is "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"/"In the Pines"/"Black Girl"/"The Longest Train I ever Saw." There was a good article about this in the NY Times about 20 years ago (after Nirvana recorded the definitive version).http://www.nytimes.com/1994/11/13/arts/pop-music-a-simple-song-that-lives-beyond-time.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

I've got a version (on CD, not the original 78) of "The Longest Train" by the Tanneva Ramblers recorded in Bristol, Tenn. in 1927. It's very similar in melody to "In the Pines." But

I've also got a song called "The Longest Train I Ever Saw" recorded in a Georgia prison camp in the '30s by an a Capella quartet. The melody is radically different but lots of the lyrical elements are there, including the part about finding the decapitated head in the driving wheel.
