      THE DOOR AND THE WINDOW

      ‘Detailed Twang’

12 track LP only: Label: Overground : Edition of 500

      Cat. No. OVER 146LP

      Release Date: 25th May 2015

Originally inspired by both the DIY ethic of the punk movement and the likes of Throbbing Gristle and File Under Pop, two friends Nag and Bendle decided to form The Door And The Window in March ’79. Lacking any musical experience, the first thing they did was to book a gig, then set off to a rehearsal studio to record their first single on a cassette recorder.

“Initially we had little interest in making "music"; we were interested in sound and noise. I had a cheap guitar and a collection of 2nd hand tape recorders, and Nag had a cheap synth. It was an advantage that we couldn't play anything. When the guy running the rehearsal studio proclaimed that we were the "worst band he had ever heard" we took it as a complement and drunkenly carolled his sentiment back to him. And recorded that, too.” – Bendle

The first single ‘Don’t Kill Colin EP’ came from the pressing plant in plain white labels and sleeves. The band pain stakingly hand-made the labels and sleeves and managed to self-distribute all 1000 copies.

The success led to a distribution deal with Rough Trade. Their next single ‘Production Line EP’ was joint NME ‘Single Of The Week’ with Ian Dury’s ‘(Hit Me With Your) Rhythm Stick’. Inspired by Crass, the Pay No More Than 55p on the sleeve caused problems for the distributors, but the single still sold an impressive 2000 copies.

As true exponents of the DIY ethic the band produced a fanzine called ‘Common Knowledge’ devoted to the politics of record reproduction and included the likes of the Desperate Bicycles.

The Door And The Window were becoming more popular and highly respected. They played with the Pop Group, Scritti Politti, Delta Five, Swell Maps and Raincoats.

The line-up of the band was always fluid and sometime members included Fritz (23 Skidoo), Dennis Burns (ATV/Good Missionaries), Grant Showbiz (The Fall) and Giblet (49 Americans). In late 1979, Mark Perry, disillusioned by the constraints and expectations of Alternative TV joined the band as druumer and co-songwriter.

As more bands formed with the same attitude the band toured as part of the ‘Weird Noise Tour’ with The Instant Automatons and 012 – a band fronted by Kif Kif and made up of members of that nights audience.

1980 saw the release of the album ‘Detailed Twang’ which sold 2000 copies at the ridiculously cheap price of £3.00, before the band split up in the summer of ’81, although they’ve reformed on an occasional basis to experiment with new ideas.

The LP replicates the original album but with the bonus of an inner bag featuring a detailed band history and rare photos, limited to just 500 copies making rarer than the highly collectable origina

      THE JACKETS (Switzerland)
Returning for their 2nd visit to WEIRDSVILLE and following their HIPSVILLE show last May that took the roof off!
THE JACKETS are back to 'FREAK you OUT!'
Combining sixties garage, mod, '77 punk rock, psychedelia and their devotion to bands like The MC5, The Monks, and The Music Machine, The Jackets bring a dynamic recipe to the garage rock 'menu'. What is important to note is that the Jackets are a Rock and Roll band - but it's the ROLL that makes the ROCK just that little bit better!

      SPEEDBALL JR (Belgium)
Speedball JR was formed in the summer of 2000 during Ghent’s (surfcity Belgium) famous surf explosion. They originally played more traditional surf rock like Dick Dale, Bobby Fuller Four and the Ventures. You can hear these influences on their first studio session which was recorded at the end of 2000 at the yellow tape studio. Later on they developed a more trashy sound with more garage and sixties influences and started to write their own tunes.
The band gigged with a number of cool surf bands like Jon & The Nightriders, Slacktone, Dick Dale, The Wangs, among others, all the time they were honing their sound and finding their own place among these contemporaries. They also supported Bo Diddley at one of his final shows.
So put on your shrunken head necklace, steal your grannies ironing board and surf on down to WEIRDSVILLE!!!

Amped-up, twin guitar, organ fuelled, driving 60's Garage from North West England.
The Shook-Ups hit hard with their fierce and loud wall of sound. With dirty fuzz grooves, pounding beats and a great frontman, this 6 piece band deliver serious dance floor action with a tough soul stomp.
Heavy Psyche drones and back from the grave 60's trash with a definable psychedelic sound reminiscent of groups such as The Bob Seger System, The Standells, The Music Machine and The Seeds yet also bringing it right up to date.

    • Hey-up, peeps,

Gore-Dinah is in search if a new, preferably female bassist.

We deliver propah, no-nonsense sweary, high energy, super fun Punk-Rock but, sadly, broke our old bass player.

We are ideally looking for a girl to keep an even boys/girls ratio on stage.

The whole of our material is original. Some of our influences are Hole, The Pixies, The Muffs, The Clash, Jack White, The Kills, The HeadCoats (and HeadCoatees!), The Primitives, Green Day, Daisy Chainsaw and many, many others...

Because of the nature of the act, we will always privilege attitude over musical abilities, although we're looking for an adult woman with enough technique to be able to remember and play 10 or so tunes in a row in tempo without falling over.

Also, an ability to remember simple tunes and lyrics and to sing them relatively in tune is a definite advantage, so is a fondness for basic, repetitive, loud punk tunes!

The ideal candidate will be able to pick up a song and make it her own.

First and foremost, we're super nice and need other super nice people to play with!
Douchebags, divas, and egomaniacs are a definite no go. Sad as it may sound, please also refrain from applying if you have alcohol, drugs or violence related issues.

Please also note that most of the material performed contains explicit lyrics, a constant use of swearwords and regular references to sex, drugs and violence.
For that reason, applicants of a sensitive disposition and/or under 18 years of age need not apply.

On the other hand, we do not discriminate on age, (Hell, the old one must have been a 100, for all I know!) colour, haircut, number of tattoos or any such bollocks. We are firm believers that Punk is about freedom, rebellion and wild abandon. Also, how you want to express that is up to you!

We will be playing live in March and so would like to be able to do 1/2 rehearsals a week to start off with.

You can listen to some of our incredibly poorly recorded tunes here:

    • NUCLEAR SOCKETTS

      ‘Complete Singles’

11 track LP only: Orange vinyl: Label: Overground

      Cat. No. OVER 144LP

      Release Date: 23rd Feb 2015

The Nuclear Socketts formed in King’s Lynn, Norfolk in April, 1979. At their first gig later that year, John Peel was in the audience. He became an immediate convert and would later give the band considerable airplay.

The band released two singles in 1981, the first of which was the ‘Honour Before Glory’ EP, released in January. It made No.1 in the King’s Lynn chart. It was so successful that the band started their own label Subversive and released records by Reality, European Toys and Section A.

In March, 1981 the band appeared as part of the John Peel Roadshow at Lowestoft College. The gig was recorded and the track ‘Riot Squad’ from the show was released as a flexi disc.

August saw the release of the ‘Play Loud’ 7”. It was a favourite of John Peel and he would often open the show with it. In the same month the band recorded a John Peel session with ex-Mott The Hoople’s Dale Griffin.

Both singles are highly sought after amongst 70s punk collectors and killed-by-death fans.

A third single was recorded at Trident Studios, London in March 1982. The A-side was ‘900 Days’ b/w ‘I’m Alive’, the former is a rewrite of an any earlier composition ‘Bully Boys’, the latter an updated faster version of ‘Pretender’s Zeal’ with a different guitar solo. The band had run out of money and had hoped that a bigger independent label would release it, but after several months and no success the impetus had been lost and the band disbanded the following year.

‘The Complete Singles’ compiles their two singles, their live flexi, the previously unreleased third single and two studio demos, limited to just 300 hand-numbered copies on orange vinyl.

       Track Listing:

      Spy In My Brain/ Potential Killers/ Pretender’s Zeal/ Play Loud/ Shadow On The Map/

      Riot Squad (live version)/ 900 Days/ I’m Alive/ Pretender’s Zeal (version 2)/ Honour Before Glory/ Riot Squad

    • Yeah,

the SHITPHONES are a 3-piece-garage band from Berlin-Kreuzberg, tightly connected to a club called Trickster.

In Summer 2014, Hank Over, Dirty Dick Diggler and Elvis Beckenbauer gathered together for 3 days and wrote 5 garage-punk emeralds with titles like "Cheap beer", "Barbara Ding-Dong", "Tour de Bar", "Human Foot switch" and ""Good feelings".

2 weeks later, they met again in the basement, this time with the faboulous sound engineer Veit Rausch and recorded all the stuff (and two covers of ON ON ON and Shocking Blue) in an amazing 18-hours session.

The result will be released early 2015 on JOHN STEAM Records.

We would like to invite interested labels and supporters to cooperate with JSR for the realization of this 7inch in a scheduled limited edition of 100-200 pieces. Cover artwork will be done by Freddy Fudd Pucker from New Zealand.

If you are interested in a release of this stuff, we can send you some mp3 of the mastered songs.

Just send a mail to johnsteamrecords@hotmail.com - or get in contact with Gary Flanell via the Profile of the Renfield-Fanzine.

      Cheers,
