      What do you use to get that garage sound? Guitars, amps, mics, recorders, organs, drums, tambourines, or anything else .. Go!

      My band's current setup/gear is:

      Fender Jazzmaster plugged into a Fender Frontman 212r. Treble and mid up to 10, Bass down to 2, REVERB all the way up.

      Rheem Mark IV organ plugged into the same amp.

      Epiphone Eb-0 plugged into a 100w Crate, bass is up, mids in the middle, treble is below the line.

      Tama Rockstar Drums, two floor toms, one tom-tom, 20' ride, 16' crash, 14' hi-hats, bass drum head is off, the toms are semi-loose and the Yamaha snare is fairly tight, it sounds like a jazz snare.

      I plug the mic into a fender frontman 25r, the eq is flat with the drive on and the reverb all the way up.

      I also forgot, I plug my guitar into a Danelectro French Toast Fuzz/Octave and a Boss TR-2 Tremolo.

      Amps: 64-65 Fender Bassman (pre CBS), Bogen 18 watt tube amp made from turntable, Ashdown 100 watt guitar head super rare handwired version -100 made, Gibson Hawk, Eden bass head, Ampeg SVT Pro, Acoustic bass head 

      Weird stuff: Elite tone Fuzz Monster pedal original prototype, Fender Echo chamber 66' tape delay unit

      I have a crappy Silvertone Rockit 21 guitar with practice amp, an MXR M-173 classic fuzz pedal and a Boss FVR '63 Fender reverb fuzz pedal. I know my guitar is cheap, but I can get a cool sounding garage tone going and the pedals add a bit of bang to things. I plan on getting a larger amplifier before too long.

      fender reverb (reissue) when it works, i've had some probs with it.

      Premier reverberation when the Fender is broke

      i use 3 different levels of distortion, and usually decide on the fly what sound i want depending on mood, intensity, the room, the audience, etc.

      they are SD-1, DS-1, and little big muff.

      Otto, let me ask you this... so you have the fender reverb because you like it better than the reverb on the twin? or is something wrong with the twin?

      My setup right now is:

      Fender Jaguar Special Edition HH >

      1968 Ampeg Scrambler >

      EHX Big Muff Germanium 4 >

      (sometimes) EHX LPB-1 >

      Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III w/ an Eminence Red, White & Blues speaker

      The Scrambler is usually only used on solos as a really filthy boost/ fuzz. Most everything else is the Big Muff. Some of the stuff that is on our (The Evil Eyes) 7" was done with an old Colorsound Supa-Tonebender and a 1968 Fender Princeton Reverb that was at Ghetto Recorders.

      Supa-Trem tremolo unit

      Tech 21 Character series Blonde

      Digitech Digiverb pedal reverb (63 re-issue spring reverb tank is best)

      Tech 21 PE60 poweramp combo

      I certainly get the sound & flexibility with this but single coils & fender amps & a heap of attitude & you can't go far wrong. Cheers.

      I tend to like vintage Kay, Silvertone, Danelectro guitars and amps (even though the new Danelectro stuff is very cool); Gold foil pickups, 15 to 30 watt tube combos, tube compressor pedal, gritty overdrive tone as opposed to staticy distortion; small drum kit, etc. to get a garage-y tone. Oh, and be sure not to spend a ton of money on this stuff. With a little bit of searching, you can find this stuff fairly cheap (buy used on Craigslist or stake out pawn shops).

      i would kill for a phantom special ,if the fuzz is anythinglike the one in the starstream then its even more amazing than i thought (and i think its godly anyway)

      You don't want to put stuff in the boot of a Mini; it gets wet! Mind you, stuff gets wet on the floor too, best just put it all on the seats.... the old Ludwig kit - bass drum, floor tom/rack tom (inside it - top skins only) went on the back seat, cymbals on top of bass drum, snare on top of that, suitacase full of things on the front seat, hi-hat sand and big boom cymbal stand on floor in back.

      I'd quite like another Mini.....

      I recently picked up a 1963 Silvertone Head/Cab and a Fender Esquire w/ a hot 50s pickup, and a Colorsound OverDriver. This set up can take me from 60s Stones to 72 at Madison Square Garden. The pickup almost makes the Esquire sound like a Les Paul Jr with more twang.

      It balances out nicely with my SG and Traynor. Though I have modded my Traynor so it combines elements of Vox, Marshall, and Hiwatt. For any kind of gritty rock it can't be beat. I use a modded DOD 250 and LPB-1 at times too. Any crude transistor based pedal and a tube amp will get you great rock tones from fuzzed out Black Keys to stringy twangy Black Lips and everything in between.

      Hi dying,

      It's a 1967 KAPA Minstrel teardrop.  KAPA was a small guitar company in Silver Spring, Maryland, near Washington DC.  KAPA made the bodies, bridges and tremolo units, and assembled everything; the necks, pickups and electronics originally came from Hofner (though later KAPA made their own), and the tuners came from Schaller.  KAPAs were were relatively cheap guitars, which meant that garage bands could afford them. I think KAPA ceased to exist in 1970 (bought out by Mosrite -- another great garage rock guitar maker).

      When I bought my stuff, to amplifie my bass-playing, the maxime was,

      all to fit into a classic mini-cooper. So I got a Ampeg Rocket-Bass-Combo

      with a 15 inch speaker, placed on the passenger seat, a Dynacord Bass-

      King T, in the foot-space, a 2x10 inch speaker by Steelphon on the 

      backseat, upon it a japanese Squier Jazz Bass and a Ibanez ATK 305.

      A box with cables, a Big Muff, a Flanger and all the rest, especially a

      box with incense sticks, placed in the boot. 

       

      I loved it !!!

      Wow, you guys have pretty much equipment, I feel a little inadequate, but still:

       

      Guitars:

      - An old black Fender Squier guitar (with that damn Floyd Rose Tremolo), I have no idea what guitar exactly that is

      - My brand new sexy Höfner Galaxie reissue

       

      Amps: An old Dean Markley 50 watt amp

       

      Effects: A Behringer Blues Overdrive, the Marshall Guv'nor, the Danelectro Tuna Melt tremolo. And in my noise band I also use a Cry Baby wah wah.

       

      Not especially garage stuff, but that's all I head or could afford to buy new...
