Radio What Wave Playlist February 24/2017 Black History Month Special

Since February is Black History Month, it’s time to do another special on Radio What Wave. This time, we quickly covered a couple of the Canadian bands of African decent that have appeared at the local Sunfest Festival here in London. From there, we covered some of the early Toronto reggae scene, Toronto 60’s soul scene and into the later reggae scene. Then we went to Vancouver for a quick listen to some of their mid 60’s soul/R&B and back to London to cover Joey Hollingsworth, a name you’re going to be hearing a lot about shortly. One of the few punk/new wave combos from this area that featured black performers was The Dice….and we talked about their London Ontario connection. Then it was off to Jamaica for some real reggae! Hope you enjoyed the sounds on this show!

      1. Marcellus Wallace…..Brothers and Sisters….from their self titled debut CD and from London Ontario.
      2. Marcellus Wallace….Movin’ On Up…. As above.  One can only hope the band can get back together as they blew me away when opening up for Barrence Whitfield and The Savages almost 2 years ago!
      3. Mighty Popo…..Turaje….from the Ngagara CD from 2003 and from Ottawa. Canadian Afrobeat!
      4. Tarig Abubakar and the Afro Nubarians…..Yuma….from the Live CD from 1995 and from Toronto. Saw this combo a few times at Sunfest and they always got the crowd up and moving! My favourite show we saw by them, was when they  played the one off Winter Sunfest at the Western Fair and had a building full of people up and groovin’ to the tunes.
      5. Alpha Ya Ya Diallo….Gugha…from his Futur CD from 1996 and based in Vancouver.
      6. Ishan Band…..Egzebier….from the Last Pogo LP and the only non-white, non-punk band on the record.  Recorded in 1978 as part of the closing of the Horseshoe Tavern for punk/new wave combos and there’s an excellent documentary on this event called The Last Pogo and the more recent The Last Pogo Jumps Again, both by Colin Brunton (whom we had on Radio What Wave at the time of the latter’s release). Colin is presently producer of the CBC comedy Schitt’s Creek which is now on Netflix.
      7. Noel Ellis….Memories…from the Jamaica To Toronto Soul Funk and Reggae compilation and we’ll be hearing lots more from this compilation. Noel is the son of legendary Jamaican artist Alton Ellis and this recording is from 1983.
      8. Johnnie Osbourne….African Wake…. As above and from 1974.
      9. Jackie Shane….Dual Trumpet Bounce….from his mid 60’s Live LP on Caravan Records. A big star in the 60’s Toronto soul scene, but troubled due to gender difficulties and disappeared for decades until found for a short time. Flamboyant and talented, Jackie could have been a major star in a different place and time! This LP has been re-ished on the OPM imprint out of Toronto.
      10. Jackie Shane….High Heel Sneakers…..as above and this LP is from 1967.
      11. Shirley Matthews….Big Town Boy….from the original 7” and a big hit in Canada in1963!
      12. The Majestics….Sweet Soul Music….from the CTV After 4 compilation LP that came out around 1968. This was for the television show of the same name that I watched as a kid. Bought the LP back when it came out and still have it to this day!
      13. Eddie Spencer….If This Is Love…..from the Jamaica To Toronto Soul Funk and Reggae compilation as heard earlier and this track is from 1967.
      14. Jo Jo and the Fugitives…..Chips Chicken Banana Split…..from 1968 and from the same comp as above. Big Thanx to Alicks Gee who was the CHRW Music Director when this comp came out as she introduced me to it and played this tune many times on her Magical Mystery Mondays radio show on CHRW.
      15. Jackie Mitoo….Grand Funk….from the same comp as above and from 1971.
      16. Trials Of Jayson Hoover…..King Size….from the compilation LP The History of Vancouver Rock And Roll Volume 2 and this is the lead track for our short listen to some Vancouver soul. Way different than the Toronto variety as Vancouver was more influenced by the US West coast and even Mexico! This track is from 1966.
      17. Night Train Revue…..Walk On The Wild Side…..as above and from the mid 60’s.
      18. Little Daddy and The Bachelors…..Too Much Monkey Business….from the same compilation as above and from 1965. This features future comedy star Tommy Chong on lead guitar as does the next track!
      19. Little Daddy and The Bachelors……Junior’s Jerk…..both this, and the above track were from their 1965 7” and on The History of Vancouver Rock And Roll Volume 2 LP.
      20. Joey Hollingsworth…..In The Mood…..from the mid 60’s and played this from Youtube, first time I’ve ever done this on the radio as I don’t own anything by Joey Hollingsworth. Joey is from London and you’ll be hearing lots more about him in the not too distant future.
      21. Joey Hollingsworth…..Little Dandelion….as above. Joey was most known as a tap dancer, appearing on Ed Sullivan, Mr Rogers and many many CBC television appearances.
      22. The Dice….Young and The Wild….from their first 7” from 1980 and were based in Toronto at this time. Punk/new wave trio in which 2 of the band members were black which was pretty well unheard of in Canada at this time. Caught them a few times here in London at the Cedar Lounge. They did a live to air on Fanshawe College radio approx. 1980 and I’ve been searching for a copy of it since hearing it live! Any help appreciated.
      23. The Dice….Typical Lies…..from their 12” from 1983.  Singer/guitarist Gary Lima went on to Fanshawe College as head of the Music Industry Arts program for awhile and drummer Hayden Vialva is currently here in London drumming for blues bands and other projects. We had Hayden on the radio several years back.
      24. The Dice…..Chayla….their hit from their self titled debut LP from 1984. Lots of airplay on Much Music garnered them some success!
      25. Jimmy Cliff….The Harder They Come….from the compilation and the movie of the same name.
      26. Tommy McCook….Work Your Soul….from the compilation CD of the same name and features mid 60’s Trojan recordings from Jamaica.
      27. Lloyd and Glen…..Mini Skirt and Go Go Boots…..from the same compilation as above. Just love the sound on these 2 recordings as it’s so primitive, yet alive and vibrant at the same time!
      28. Boris Gardener……Melting Pot…..from a 1973 LP called Is What’s Happening on the Jamaican Dynamic Sounds label, yet it says licensed by Trans World Records from Montreal on the rear cover.  Very cool Memphis influenced reggae soul!!
      29. Norma Fraser…..Respect….from a Studio One Soul compilation CD and originally released in 1967.
      30. The Maytones…..Sha La La….from the Trojan Records compilation called Tight Rock from the mid 60’s. Way cool compilation LP I picked up the other day.
      31. Fela Kuti…..Zombie…..from his Greatest Hits CD and didn’t get to play the full length as Jessie arrived for his show. Fela is one of my faves and there was a documentary on Netflix recently, that blended footage from the Broadway play about Fela with live footage and interviews with band and management. This song goes out to what is happening south of the border these days.

Big Thanx for all the emails, facebook messages and phone calls!!  This was a fun show to put together and barely skimmed the surface of Black music. Do yourself a favour, check out your local record haunts and pick up some soul, reggae, blues, Afrobeat and just about any other form of Black music and you might be in for a huge surprise!! Most of the records I’ve been buying lately are by Black artists and I’m really enjoying finding so many musical treasures! It’s great to keep an open ear to different styles of music!

Next week we’ll be doing a special on London’s Legend Killers, a band that released an EP on What Wave Records as well as appeared on all our compilations but one!  We’ll be playing many studio tracks as well as some audio of their very first club gig here in town from  1985…..it might really surprise you!!  And we’ve got a stack of new releases just waiting to be  played!

      11. Rudi…..Time To Be Proud….from The Radio Sessions 1979-1981 CD and also from Ireland.
      12. Protex…..Strange Things….from the Strange Obsessions LP on Sing Sing Records released in 2010 with recordings from the late 70’s/early 80’s. Another Irish powerpop combo and these guys played The Cedar Lounge here in London back then.
      13. Death Drive……Firestar……brand new demo from this trio from Montreal.
      14. Light Bulb Alley…..Who Do You Love….from their recent Bright Side Of The Dumpster CD and also from Montreal.

      18. Paul James Band…..Trespasser….from a 1980 7” on Lick’n’Stick Records. Paul James Band were at the London Music Club last night and were just amazing!!! Smiles all around as everyone had a great time in the packed and sweaty club! Trivia, bass player Mike Theodore is the brother of Robbie Rox, the infamous singer from Toronto.
      19. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons….Scars Of Love….from the cassette Slippery’s Club Hits that came with What Wave 24 and we’ll have copies of this with us at the London Record Show on Sunday March 19th at Centennial Hall.
      20. Coaching For Sara…… Stick With You…..from the 2/10/2017 live to air on Radio What Wave. Catch these guys live if you can as they put on a great powerpop show.
      21. Dahlmanns……Play It….from a brand new 7” on Beluga Records and from Norway.
      22. Rory Gallagher…..Secret Agent Man…..from the Calling Card LP from 1976. On the Chrysalis Record label and features keyboardist Lou Martin, who seems to really propel the band with his frantic keyboard style.
      23. Rory Gallagher…..Souped Up Ford….from the Against The Grain Lp from 1975 and as above.  Ireland’s finest guitarist and the master of the Stratocaster!!!
      24. Matt Lucas…..Movin’ On….from a 7” given to me by Jack Whiteside, guitarist/vocalist for Uranus. Jack worked as Matt’s guitarist for a summer, a learning experience that Jack still uses to this day.
      25. Rockin’ Bobby….Yup Yup Boogie……this one played for about 10 seconds and then the CD quit…..this is 2 shows in a row where this has happened…..both were home burned CD’s.
      26. Leroi Brothers….Darlene Darlene…. From the Lucky Lucky Me Lp from 1985 and features Evan Johns on guitar and vocals. Evan passed away last weekend, way too young!! One heck of a guitar picker and really nice guy whenever we met him.
      27. Evan Johns…..Rollin’ Through The Night….from the LP of the same name from the mid 80’s and recorded in 1982. This record was released on Alternative Tentacles as Jello Biafra was a huge fan of Evan’s! This is probably my fave Evan Johns LP as every track is an absolute gem of a song! Opener Vacation Time is such a classic song and brings the whole element of a vacation out in its lyrics! If you want to peruse the musical library of Evan Johns, this is a great place to start!
      28. Evan Johns…..If I Had My Way….from the self titled LP from 1986 on Jungle Records. I have many records on the Jungle label and all are great rock’n’rollers.
      29. Julian Taylor Band….Heard Good Things….from the recent Desert Star CD and these guys will be at Aeolian Hall on Saturday March 25th. Congrats to Laurie Hamilton for winning the tickets for the show we gave away!

Radio What Wave Playlist March 24/2017. Special Guest Al The Killer Coulter

      1. TVD….TVD…from their debut CD, Salvation Through Distraction and they are playing tonight at the St Regis Hotel and they will be celebrating the guitarists wife’s birthday, so just about anything might happen!
      2. The Fiends…..30 Something…..local combo who will be playing live to air on next week’s edition of Radio What Wave!!
      3. Blasting Fondas….Saddest Excuse….from a brand new 7” on Beluga Records and from Sweden.
      4. Tommy and The Rockets….Get Ready....another brand new 7” on Beluga Records and these guys come from Denmark.
      5. Dany Laj and the Looks….Defending Champ….from the brand new Alive and Kicking CD and they are on a North America tour right now! We dedicated this song to Al The Killer Coulter, London pro wrestler who joined us later in the show.
      6. Baby Giant…..Summer’s Almost Gone….local talent featuring Shawn McDonald (and his brother) who was in Radio What Wave faves The Fine Print and many many other bands over the years.
      7. Pacanomad…..Shot The Gun….from the recent Take It Slow CD and they will be playing tonight at Aeolian Hall along with….
      8. Julian Taylor Band…..Coke Bottle Candle….from the recent Desert Star CD and from Toronto.
      9. Chuck Berry….Bio….from the LP of the same name where Chuck tells the story of his life. It’s a slow bluesy little number and really shows off some of Chuck’s guitar picking.
      10. Chuck Berry….Maybelline….from The Great Twenty-Eight double LP. This is the song that started it all and set up the prototype for the hits to follow. Believe it or not, this came out in 1955!!! On this particular recording is the genius piano playing of Johnny Johnson (who incidentally was in London about 10 years ago), the rock solid bass playing of song writing legend Willie Dixon, rock solid drumming of Jasper Thomas and soon to be a legend maraca shaker Jerome Green (he helped create the Bo Diddly Beat!).  Absolute killer lineup that set up your basic rock’n’roll band sound that still rules to this day (at least in my books!). Can’t say enough about Johnny Johnson as it was his band that Chuck joined to start it all off. Without those essential piano licks, who knows what would have happened!

If you only want to get one Chuck Berry LP for your collection. The Great Twenty-Eight is the one to get….all the hits from 1955 right up to 1965. It’s on the Chess label (Chuck’s original record label) and comes as a double LP with a gatefold sleeve with listing of all the musicians on each track (essential for geeks like me) and a few liner notes.

      1. Hiroshima Hearts….The Well….from their debut CD and they will be playing at the SOHO as an afternoon show on Sunday.
      2. Pack AD…..Blackout….from the Funeral Mixtape LP from 2007.
      3. Lauren Agnelli and Dave Rave….Can’t Stop The Rain….from the Confetti CD from 1997 and goes out to Lauren who celebrated a birthday this week! Lauren was a real early contributor to the NYC punk scene and went under the pseudo name of Trixie A Balm in writing for such legendary magazines as Cream, NY Rocker, Village Voice and many others. Later, she formed The Washington Squares, a folk type band that were nominated for a Grammy.
      4. The Secrets….All The Girls In The World….from the OPM CD called Teenage Rampage. Late 70’s Toronto garage/frat combo that were way out of step with the rest of the punk movement at the time. This one goes out to singer Freddy Pompeii who is in the hospital in Philadelphia fighting cancer. We send our best to Freddy!!!!
      5. Ray Condo and His Hardrock Goners…..Blast Off….from the brand new re-ish of the 1987 Hot’n’Cold LP. Can’t say enough good things about this band, Ray and the boys put on legendary shows back in the late 80’s, even came to London at least 3 times and left some great memories!!
      6. Ray Condo and His Hardrock Goners….Worryin’ Kind….as above, just couldn’t play one song from this long time fave LP of mine!
      7. Bloodshot Bill and The Hubcaps…..Touch Me….from the Crazy Fever CD that came out in 2003. This is prior to Bill going solo and touring the world on what seems like a non-ending cycle! If Bloodshot Bill comes to your town, he’ll put on a wild and sweaty show that you won’t forget!
      8. Catl….Gotta Thing For You….from the Soon This Will All Be Gone CD from a couple years back. Another band you gotta check out live if they ever come to your town! They’ve put on many a killer show with Bloodshot Bill, but recently they’ve been doing more and more trips way down south to Clarksdale, where the legends say the blues all started!
      9. Foreign Objects….Wrestling Is Real….from the Not Too Cool CD and recorded in 1981. This Boston area combo did a lot of wrestling and television related tunes back in that time period and this one is to start the wrestling portion of the show.
      10. Foreign Objects….Rock and Wrestling Roll…. As above.
      11. Tijuana Bibles….Custom Made Man…from the Custom Made CD and there might be a Leather Upper involved in this project!. Right about this time, Al The Killer Coulter arrived to talk wrestling and about the huge show happening on Sunday night at the London Music Hall. SMASH Wrestling is returning to London and they finally have a big enough venue to fit the people in comfortably! I’ve gone to several SMASH shows here in London and they’ve all been good entertainment value for the money. There’s always a few guys from the big leagues and this time is no exception as Colt Cabana, Cody Deaner, Tyson Dux, Davey Richards and many other big names will be at the show. Al layed it on the line and told us what he was going to do the young punks he and his partner Mr Atlantis were facing! I wouldn’t want to be one of those young punks!! Al also mentioned there were going to be a few surprises, but wouldn’t give out any hints…
      12. Fred Blassie….Pencil Neck Geeks…..from the Rhino LP from the late 70’s and a special request by Al The Killer Coulter…..believe me, whatever Al wants, he gets!!!
      13. The Dictators….Borneo Jimmy….New York New York CD on ROIR Records and Al was talking about working with Jimmy Snuka so this kind of fit in.

Big Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! And a HUGE thanx to all that came up to say HEY at the London Record Show last weekend!!! That was a blast!

And a HUGE THANX to Al The Killer Coulter for making time to chat with us on air about all things wrestling. If you haven’t figured it out, I’m a huge wrestling fan for Ring Of Honor and Lucha Underground wrestling leagues!

Next week, we’ve got a live to air to kick things off as The Fiends are going to be playing live just after 4PM if everything works out technically! There’s a TON of work that goes on in the background to make these things happen and I’d like to thank our tech crew in advance as they are the best!!

      27. Larry Lee and the Leesures…..Odd Man Out….from their self titled LP from 1965 and a song sometimes covered by The Black Holes and this one should have been recorded by The Cramps as it’s definitely in their style.
      28. Nihilist Spasm Band…..This Is A Test….from London Ontario’s longest running band???
      29. Sheep Look Up…..Propaganda Train…..unreleased demo from this band that was inducted into the Jack Richardson London Music Hall Of Fame last year.
      30. Suffer Machine…..Suffer Machine….from the LP of the same name and released in 1986.
      31. Flying Squad….Brian Mulroney…..a demo about our former Prime Minister.
      32. Strait Jacket…Dance To The Beat Machine….from a 7” from the mid 80’s.

Huge Thanx to the Fiends for taking the time to come in to play live to air here on Radio What Wave. And a Huge Thanx to Adam and his crew for making it sound so good!

Next week we’ve got one, possibly 2 members of UIC coming on air live to talk about the UIC reunion show happening next Saturday, April 8th with Boy From Nowhere and Myrtle Earl!!

And this coming week, starting Sunday April 2nd is Jack Richardson London Music Week with literally TONS of events happening. Check facebook for all the details.

Radio What Wave Extra Long Show Playlist April 7/2017

We started this show at 3:30 (Thanx to our Program Director Ando for giving us the extra time!) and the first half hour was pretty much all Uranus recordings. Uranus recordings as they will be inducted into the Jack Richardson London Music Hall Of Fame this Sunday. The show is happening at the London Music Hall, starts at 7PM and is a free show! Hope to see lots of you out at this event!

Then around 4PM we did the world radio premier of 63 Monroe’s latest LP, Jeff, which is dedicated to the late Jeff Depew, drummer in many of London’s finest bands over the last 20 or so years!

Then we had a special guest in Dave Dysart, guitarist for UIC who are returning to London Ontario for the first time in about 25 years! Dave is the new guy, but familiar to most of us via The Supreme Bagg Team and he has worked with most of the members of UIC in other projects over the years. We yammered like 2 old farts after having way too many beers and had a lot of laughs. Learned a few things too!! UIC will be at Call The Office on Saturday night with Boy From Nowhere and Myrtle Earle.

      1. Uranus....Highschool….recorded live at the Embassy Hotel 3/22/1982 and broadcast on CHRW. Probably recorded live by Peter Moore.
      2. Uranus….Route 66….live recording from a car show in Toronto and broadcast on CFNY, probably 1980.
      3. Uranus….Around And Around….recorded live at Kellys Boogie Parlour and broadcast over the airwaves of CKSL here in London….early 80’s? Kellys later became Bullwinkles, which became Hard Times, then a mall and much later Salt Lounge and even later….
      4. Uranus….Maybe Baby…..recorded live at Call the Office 10/27/12 as part of the Graphic Underground: London 1977-1990 art show and extravaganza.
      5. Uranus…..Secret Agent…. As above.
      6. Uranus….You’re So Square….from the 1980 Trilogy LP You’re So Square….this is the song that made top 10 across Canada and number 3 on CKSL in 1980.
      7. Uranus….53 Buick….from the You’re So Square LP
      8. Uranus….Along The Watchtower…. As above.
      9. 63 Monroe….Punk Rock Goalie….from the brand new LP called Jeff, for late drummer Jeff Depew. This is most likely the radio debut as the record just came out this past Wednesday when 63 Monroe played at Rumrunners as part of the Jack Richardson London Music week. Also on the bill that eve was The Mongrels and Black Donnellys.  Great turnout and a really fun eve of music!
      10. UIC….Pushed In To The Hole….from the brand new Wiseman Sessions that came out on Yeah Right Records. The record release party is happening Saturday night at Call The Office and at this point, we were joined by Dave Dysart, guitar player for UIC.
      11. Boy From Nowhere….. Southward Bound….recorded live at the Dawghouse, 11/26/16 and the Boy are one of 2 (the other Myrtle Earle) combos opening up for UIC on Saturday night.
      12. Boy From Nowhere….Back In The USA….. as above.
      13. The Supreme Bagg Team…. Crankin’ With Elvis….from the Mr Garager’s Neighbourhood LP on OG Records from 1989. The Bagg Team was a band that Dave Dysart was in and they appeared on a couple of What Wave compilation cassettes as well. In my opinion, my fave tune by these guys and this shoulda been a hit!!
      14. The Supreme Bagg Team….20th Century Dog Faced Boy….from their only longplayer, Stereo on OG Records.
      15. UIC….Light It And Fly….from the Wiseman Sessions LP.
      16. UIC….Outta Hand….from the Wiseman Sessions LP.
      17. UIC….Green Lady…..from the Wiseman Sessions LP.
      18. UIC…2 + 2….from a rarities CD that Dave brought and most likely from the Accusonic demos from 1985.
      19. UIC….Blade In The Back…. As above.
      20. UIC…..Who’ll Start The End….. as above.
      21. UIC….Cure The War…. As above.
      22. UIC…..Our Garage….recorded live at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto 9/16 and the only recording we have of Dave in the band.  Dave Dysart has only played 2 shows so far with UIC, but as he says, rehearsed a TON of times!
      23. UIC….Crop Dusting….live recording from Call The Office 3/16/1985. This one goes out to regular listener Mike Burton as he phoned to ask if UIC was going to play this tune at the show.
      24. UIC…..Shamrock Bang…. As above.
      25. UIC…..I Got Nerve…. As above.
      26. UIC…..Let’s Work Together…. As above
      27. UIC….Telephone…. as above.
      28. UIC…..Nashville Dreamin’….from the Our Garage LP on Fringe Records.
      29. UIC….All Together Now…. As above.
      30. UIC…..You Drive Mad…. As above.
      31. UIC...I’m Alive… as above
      32. The Chickens….Chicken Ride….from the Prepare To Plug In CD from 2000. 4/5 of this band was UIC and this same 4/5 are in the present UIC…..make sense?   Ken Mikalauskas was the other guitar player in The Chickens,  he moved out east and Dave Dysart came in when UIC reformed to do one show a year ago. Since then, they’ve played one more and Saturday marks their 3rd show!
      33. The Chickens….White Squirrel Town…. As above. We played this song as UIC will most likely be playing this on Saturday night.
      34. UIC….Rich Kids….from the Wiseman Sessions and we had to fade this out as we more than ran out of time.

Huge Thanx to Dave Dysart for taking the time to come onair and yammer about UIC and things from days gone by. Hope you listeners had as much fun as I did!!!

Sunday is the annual Jack Richardson London Music Awards happening at London Music Hall. Uranus will be inducted into the hall of fame that night and play a couple of songs live. We're nominated in one of the categories....and it's free!   See you on Sunday night!

Next week will be a Good Friday show and we’ll continue with the almost all local tunes with a few new releases that have been dropped off at HQ…..Thanx to all the bands that take the time to send us stuff!!!

      12. Marcellus Wallace…Dollar Bill….from a CD a couple of years back. Only got to see them once, opening for Barrence Whitfield and the Savages and both bands put on killer shows.

      14. Jim Ashby….Speed City….from a re-issue 7” on Speed City Records. Originally came out back in 1970.

      19. J Geils….It Ain’t What You Do….from the 1971 The Morning After LP.
      20. J Geils….Love-it is….from the 1975 Hotline LP.  Some may remember that Canadian white soul combo Mandala recorded this a few years prior to the J Geils version. Both are great party inducing originals.

Radio What Wave Playlist April 28/2016….Steven R. Stunning as Special Guest

First show in a coupla weeks, we had a special guest in Mr Steven R. Stunning, frontman, CEO of longlasting local combo 63 Monroe, a band that has helped put London Ontario on the map. Shoulda looked at my notes as there were a coupla questions on the agenda that got missed, but we went in way different directions than originally planned. Free form radio in the modern age only happens on college airwaves….and we had a TON of fun!

      1. The New Christs….Born Out Of Time….played the Sonics Records 7” French press of this one and challenged the Boy From Nowhere to cover this one!! Had to get some anger out of my system due to some shit that happened today and no better way than this and the next blast o’sonic splash and free form vocalization courtesy the Boy Wonder Rob Younger. Grrrr!
      2. The New Christs….No Next Time….flip of the above and the dueling guitars on this one always slay me…..so nice!
      3. Downbeat 5….Kicked Around….from their debut CD dating around 2003 and on SFTRI. Singer Jen Rassler just lets loose and the anger leaves my system….whew!! Guitar crunch courtesy of DMZ vet JJ Rassler…maybe you remember him from the Queers. And he was probably a Lyre at one time or another as well. But I feel much better now.
      4. The Hippies….Nuclear Disaster….from their only 7”, early 80’s and from London Ontario. This one went out to musicologist Jesse Locke who is looking for this record. And 2 of these guys are in The Boy From Nowhere…..who happen to be playing tonight at the SOHO here in London Ontario.
      5. The Hippies….Can Teens….from the cassette, Slippery’s Club Hits, that came with What Wave 24 and also goes out to Jesse, as he hadn’t heard this one yet.
      6. 63 Monroe….At The Boot….from the same cassette as above and recorded in 1980 at the Cedar Lounge here in town and the intro to Mr Steven R. Stunning who got caught in the Tim’s lineup due to exam week happening here on campus.
      7. 63 Monroe….You Can’t See It….from the brand new Jeff LP. For late drummer Jeff Depew who did his last ever drumming on this recording.
      8. 63 Monroe….Oh No You Again…. As above. Steven informed me this is a Rolling Stones song. And he did all the proper paperwork for this release.
      9. 63 Monroe….Luxury….as above. And this is where Steven found out that the track order is incorrect on the LP sleeve.
      10. 63 Monroe….TV Is Brain Damage…. As above.
      11. 63 Monroe….Tickle Whisper Kiss…. As above.
      12. 63 Monroe….Hijack Victim….from a live recording 11/26/2016 at the Dawghouse here in London. Recording by longtime CHRW host John Gardi, The NiteBat.
      13. 63 Monroe….Battle Of New Orleans…. As above and this went out to local scribe Robert Pegg.
      14. 63 Monroe….Weekend Punx…. As above.
      15. 63 Monroe….Waiting…..from a live recording from Easter 1980 at the Cedar Lounge. I taped this one from the radio back in 1980 and it may have been recorded by Grammy winner and former CHRW host Peter Moore. He was known as Simon Less during his stint here many years ago.
      16. 63 Monroe….Johnny B Goode…. As above.
      17. 63 Monroe…..Road Runner…. As above
      18. 63 Monroe….Bad Boy…. As above.
      19. NFG….. After….. from a recording supplied by Robert Gliddon, bass player for NFG, the pre-cursor to 63 Monroe. Probably from 1979.
      20. NFG….House Of The Rising Sun…. as above.
      21. NFG….Give ‘Em Up… as above.
      22. 63 Monroe……Punk Rock Goalie….from the recent Jeff LP
      23. 63 Monroe…..Horizontal Hold….from the Hijack Victim LP on Rave Records out of Italy.

Big Thanx to Steven R. Stunning for taking the time to join us and answer a load of stupid questions, live on air. It was a blast, and judging by the feedback I’ve received so far, people had fun listening to us old farts yammer about things long gone!

Thanx for all the crazy phone calls, emails, facebook messages and texts!!

Radio What Wave Playlist May 5/2017   Teenage Rampage On A Senior’s Discount….7” Of Pleasure

Started the show with a visit from Miesha and The Spanks (Miesha and Shawn) who were in town to play at Call The Office on the evening of this show. All the way from Calgary to play in our little town!!

From there, it was a TON of 7” singles that I really dig! Loads of rare stuff and some of my faves.

      1. Miesha and The Spanks…..Stranger….from their brand new self released 7”
      2. Miesha and The Spanks….Motorin’….the flip of the above 7”.
      3. Miesha and The Spanks….Leather Jacket….from the Gods Of Love LP on Transistor 66 Records from a few years back. Around this time we finished with a quick interview of Miesha and Shawn and they are playing tonight at Call The Office.
      4. Sacred Miracle Cave….Summertime….from a 7” on SFTRI from 1989 and a collaboration of sorts as some of the members of Clawhammer are involved in this project.
      5. The Cramps….Drug Train….from 1980 release on Illegal Records
      6. Tex Rubinowitz….Hot Rod Man….from a 1979 7” on Ripsaw Records. Lux Interior once said of Tex, that he gets down so far, there’s nothing but a hiccup between the floor and Tex, to paraphrase.
      7. Martha Hull…Feelin’ Right Tonight….another Ripsaw 7”, this from 1981. Martha was at one time lead vocals for DC’s Slickee Boys.  Martha really lets loose on this one, but you already knew that.
      8. The Customs….Bring My Cadillac Back… On Shake Records out of Cincinnati from around 1980. Features Peter Greenberg on the killer guitar, presently in Barrence Whitfield and the Savages.
      9. Cherry Vanilla….The Punk….1977 release on RCA Records and at one time was on the jukebox at the Cedar Lounge here in London.
      10. Immaculate Hearts…..Sugar Pussy….from a 1990 release on SFTRI and features Freddy Pompeii on lead vocals. Freddy is in hospital in Philly and needs our love and support!
      11. Sydicate Of Sound….Hey Little Girl….from 1966 and on the Bell label. Freddy was in a late version of this combo.
      12. The Yardbirds….Stroll On…from the Blow Up 7” soundtrack for the movie.  Locally the Boy From Nowhere cover this one.
      13. The Nerves….Hanging On The Telephone….from their self released EP from 1976. Blondie later covered this one and had a bit of a hit with it.
      14. Flamin’ Groovies….Shake Some Action….from a 7” on the Line Records label from Germany. Way different than the album version.
      15. Barracudas…..1965 Again…from a 1980 7” on Zonophone Records. Features X Ottawa Jeremy Gluck on lead vocals.
      16. Taxi Boys….I Can’t Kick…from a 7” EP on the Star Rhythm label. This is actually the Real Kids under a different name for some odd reason.
      17. The Dawgs…Shot Of Your Love…..from a 1979 7” on Greenline Records and out of the Boston area.
      18. The Blasters…..American Music…from a 1982 7” on FBEAT Records.
      19. The Fleshtones….The World Has Changed….from a 1981 7” on IRS Records. The Fleshtones celebrate their 40th anniversary of a band this year!!! One of my all time fave live combos, still doing it 40 years on!!!
      20. The Last….She Don’t Know Why….from a 1978 7” on Bomp Records.
      21. Miracle Workers…..Hung Up….from the Moxie EP from 1984.
      22. The Ruts….Babylon’s Burning….from a 1979 7” on Virgin Records.
      23. The Rezillos….I Wanna Be Your Man….from a 1977 7” on Sensible Records. Every Rezillos single I have, has way different versions of the songs as on the longplayer. Just love the bass playing on this one, so powerful!
      24. The Buzzcocks….Boredom….from the Spiral Scratch EP from 1977. This has vocals by Howard Devoto who left the band to form Magazine.
      25. The Crimson Shadows….You Can’t Come Down….from a 1985 7” on Sunlight Records and from Sweden.
      26. Misanthropes….Why Do You Treat Me So Bad….from a late 80’s 7” on Get Hip Records.
      27. The Cynics….Painted My Heart….from a 1985 7” on Dionysus Records. This is the only Cynics record without longtime vocalist Micheal Kastelic.
      28. The Cunts….. Date With Disaster….from a 1982 7” on Disturbing Records and from Chicago.

Ran outta time, certainly not records as we had planned to play many more. We’ll play a few more on next week’s show and we have Shane from Coaching For Sarah as a visitor next week.

Big thanx to Ando for letting me play with the content rules for one week only, Huge Thanx to Miesha and the Spanks for taking the time to come on air live and yammer about their show tonight at Call The Office. And thanx for all the emails, facebook messages, phone calls and Heys!!! That’s what makes it all worthwhile!

      6. Bath Salts….We Should Surf….from their recent Mardi Gras CD and from London.

      8. The Chickens…..Summer Of Love…from the 2000 CD Prepare To Plug In.
      9. The Dahlmanns…..Forever My Baby….brand new 7” on Next Big Thing Records out of Scotland but this combo is from Norway. Featuring Andy Shernoff of Dictators fame on vocals and song writing.
      10. Dany Laj and the Looks….Mixing A Drink….from their recent Alive and Kicking CD and from Montreal.

      22. Stark Naked and the Fleshtones…..I Wanna Marry Your Mother….from a self released/titled CD and from Toronto. Late 70’s/early 80’s punk combo that are not to be confused with The Fleshtones from NYC.
      23. Teenage Head….Kissin’ The Carpet….from a 1980 live recording from the Spoke and Rim Tavern on the Western University campus. This was broadcast live by CHRW back then and I recorded it on my cassette deck. CHRW did many live broadcasts from the Spoke Tavern back in those days.
      24. Dave Rave…..Picture My Face….from the recent  A Little Messed Up In Rock’n’Roll LP that Dave released for Record Store Day.

Radio What Wave Playlist August 4/2017. Jason Dickson as Special Guest

We had Jason Dickson (Co-author, along with Vanessa Brown of London 150 Cultural Moments) on as a special guest to talk about the book and London Ontario history. We had a delightful conversation, bringing up a few of the moments caught in the book as well as a few that weren’t in the book. Talked about the musical history of London Ontario, start of the punk rock scene and loads more!! It was a total blast and hope you listeners had as much fun as we did!

      1. Mongrels….Nice Tits….didn’t mean to play this song and hopefully no one was offended. Meant to play All Systems Go. The Mongrels are celebrating the 3rd anniversary of their monthly Rock’n’Roll Rent Party at the Richmond on Sunday from 4 till 7 PM.
      2. Nihilist Spasm Band….Stop And Think  Shitheads….an early 70’s recording of London’s longest lasting band?!? Well covered in the book, as are its participants as they were a key part of an art/cultural movement here in London. This band has toured a good part of the world and are legends in many places, yet almost unknown in their home town. Which says a lot about London Ontario.
      3. The Demics….New York City….from their 1979 EP, Talk’s Cheap on Ready Records. London’s most known punk combo and their most popular tune and it’s all about leaving London! Forgot to mention that Ready Records formed right here in London as its main participants were students in Fanshawe College Music Industry Arts. A program founded by former UK Pirate DJ Tom Lodge….and was later joined by famed Guess Who producer Jack Richardson (hence the Jack Richardson Music Awards here in London).
      4. The Demics….Heart Of The City….live recording from the Cedar Lounge 1978, London’s infamous punk/new wave/whatever club that was at the north west corner of King and Talbot. Ironically, there are large balls located there now! This particular song sums up going down town to see the bands at the clubs in the 70’s/80’s.
      5. Uranus….You’re So Square….from a live recording broadcast on CHRW 3/22/1982 from the Embassy Hotel. You’re So Square was the top 10 single that put Uranus on the Canadian musical map and even allowed them to travel to Vancouver to be on CBC television.  The Embassy was a hot spot form the mid 80’s onwards until closing and mysteriously burning to the ground not long after. London has an issue with former hot spots burning to the ground…ie The Brunswick Hotel.
      6. Uranus….Shake Some Action….from a live radio broadcast on CFNY 5/1980. CFNY was the first commercial radio station in Canada to play the punk/new wave thing when it started. Unfortunately you couldn’t receive their signal here in London. In the summer of 1978, 6X, the Fanshawe Radio station hoped on the bandwagon and started playing punk/new wave music!! That was a godsend for many of us! A year or so later CHRW started broadcasting over the TV cable network for part of London. I was lucky enough to live in the area that received CHRW! Many live shows were aired over CHRW, with DJ Simon Less (Peter J Moore who won a Grammy last year!) recording many of these live shows. You’d be at a show and see a white styrofoam head in the crowd with wires coming out of the ears. This is what Simon used to record the band.
      7. Jim Ashby….Speed City….from a 1970 7” that was re-released by Speed City Records a couple years back. In 1970 London was referred to as the speed capital of Canada, hence this amazing song by CJOE DJ Jim Ashby. You can grab a copy of this 7” from Speed City Records on Springbank Drive here in London.
      8. The Blackholes…..Superfreak….from a live recording at the Brunswick Hotel. The Brunswick was a hot spot from the late 80’s onwards and many a young combo was fermented here. Closed down a few years back and mysteriously burned to the ground right after closing. The Blackholes have been around for years, starting as Viv Sun and The Blackholes and show up at art openings every now and then. Guitarist Tom Hilborn is a well known visual artist.
      9. Osterberg…..London Eats Its Own….from a 10” record they released in 1993. This one is a who’s who collection of punk musicians and misfits.
      10. The Stoves….Just My Style….live recording from the Cedar Lounge circa 1979 and one of the bands that shoulda gone on to big things. Just listen to those harmony vocals. Drummer Greg Moore went on to play in…
      11. Sheep Look Up…..Burning….from their 1982 cassette and another London combo that should have and almost did make it. They did get play on Much Music, released an EP and were on the cusp of greatness….
      12. 63 Monroe….At The Boot….from a live recording aired on CHRW around 1980. The Boot refers to the Blue Boot, the previous name of The Cedar Lounge. 63 Monroe featured (and still does to this day) Steven R Stunning on lead vocals, a one time mayoral candidate and he even had a weekly music column in the London Free Press, our only daily rag.
      13. NFG…..Weekend Punx….from a live recording from the York Hotel. NFG stood for non-functioning gear or some reference to not that great. Steven R Stunning was vocalist for this combo and they morphed into 63 Monroe (there may have been a First Date along the way). The York Hotel is now known as Call The Office (with a stop at The Promised Land along the way) and is one of the best known rock’n’roll clubs in North America!! Some of the shows I’ve seen there include; The Cynics. Monomen, Das Furlines (probably the best show ever!!), Subhumans, DOA, Link Wray, The Sadies, Andre Williams, Dictators, Teenage Head, Forgotten Rebels, Paul Collins Beat and soooo many more! My fave club here in London!
      14. The Zellots….Soldiers…from a 1980 recording and our first punk/new wave combo to feature 3 females in the band! Another one of those band that coulda and shoulda but didn’t quite make the next step. They opened for John Cale (Velvet Underground) at Fryfogles here in London and he asked them to come to the UK to open a tour for him. The band couldn’t muster up the airfare and had to cancel.  But, The Zellots are about to release their first record next month! Some late 70’s recordings they did in Vancouver when they lived there for a year or so. More details on that real soon!
      15. Thundermug…..Africa…..1972 single that got radio airplay across Canada and helped put us on the musical map. The members of Thundermug are still active on the local music scene to this day!
      16. Larry Lea….Odd Man Out….from his mid 60’s LP on  Canatal Records. This is rockabilly music released when the Beatles are the second coming! Timing is everything in music luckily we have the Black Holes to cover this one! The song title surmises my life and should have been covered by The Cramps.
      17. Terminal Wallys….City Saviour….. from their New Old School CD from a few years back. Again, screwed up and played the wrong song, meant to play The East End, a tune about living east of Adelaide St but this song means just as much to London.

Ran out of time, but certainly not things to talk about with Jason Dickson, nor London songs to play. One of the fastest 2 hours of my life and a pure joy to talk about London.

You can pick up Jason Dickson and Vanessa Brown’s book. London 150 Cultural Moments at their bookstore, Brown and Dickson on Richmond St, at Chapters and most other cool book stores around! It’s a fun read for the reading room and brings out all kinds of trivia that you probably didn’t know.

Back next week with Andrew from Running From Daylight (new local rockabilly combo) and some of the members of Hiroshima Hearts as we do the world premiere of their brand new 7” record!!! And they have a record release party set up for September 16th at the Aeolian Hall!

Radio What Wave Playlist August 11/2017

We started a new feature with this edition of Radio What Wave, Meet Your Local Band. We met 2 local bands, Running From Daylight, a fairly recent addition to the London music scene, and Hiroshima Hearts, a well established band who are just about to release their first 7’ record. In fact, we did the world premiere of this about to be released record on the show!

      1. Twin Fin….Jungle Room….from their brand new just released vinyl  LP Whiskey Wine and Venom Love. The record release party was last weekend at the Richmond Hotel, and it was to a packed and enthusiastic crowd!
      2. Running From Daylight….Elvis Ain’t Dead….live recording from Call The Office. Right about this time, Andrew Bellini-Rutledge (vocals and guitar) from Running From Daylight came onair to talk about the band’s big show happening on the eve of this radio show and all things Running From Daylight. This was our first attempt at Meet Your Local Band and it seemed to go over well.
      3. Running From Daylight….Folsom Prison Blues….as above.
      4. Running From Daylight…Coffin For 2….from a recent demo that you can download from Bandcamp.
      5. Running From Daylight…Devil’s Night….as above.  Big Thanx to Andrew for coming onair to talk and be the inaugural (guinea pig) for our new Meet Your Local Band feature!
      6. The Zantees….Please Give Me Something….from their 1980 LP Out For Kicks on Bomp Records and played this as Andrew sounds a bit like the young Billy Miller on this track. And that ain’t anything to be taken lightly!
      7. The Thing From Outer Space…..Too Drunk To Surf….their latest demo and they are playing with Running From Daylight at the Richmond on the eve of this show.
      8. The Thing From Outer Space….The Thing From Outer Space….from their recent CD of the same name.
      9. Roger Zuraw….Homeless Man….brand new and from an upcoming release by Etobicoke resident.
      10. 3 O’Clock Train….Train Of Dreams….from the 1985 LP Wig Wam Beach. Features Mack MacKenzie on vocals and guitar and we’ll be featuring Mack on a live to air in 2 weeks time here on Radio WW (August 25th).
      11. Fireball Grant….Alright Now….from his latest recordings and we had Fireball on a couple weeks back.
      12. The Bandits….Bandito….from The Electric 12 LP from the mid 60’s and this features Glen Campbell on the 12 string Rick. RIP to Glen Campbell.
      13. The Heck….Waiting In Line…from a brand new 7” on Dirty Water Records from the UK.
      14. Steppenwolf….Born To Be Wild…from a Greatest Hits LP and goes out to Goldy McJohn who played the big keyboards on this one. RIP to Goldy. For those that don’t know, Steppenwolf started out in Toronto as The Sparrow, then moved out to California, renamed themselves and took off from there.
      15. Hiroshima Hearts…..Spend Your Money….from the Bone Music EP and right about here, Jenn Marino and Michael DV joined me for the second Meet Your Local Band feature on this show.
      16. Hiroshima Hearts….Reach Out….from the about to be released 7” on Hiroshima Hearts Records. This was the official world premiere over the airwaves! The official release party is September 16th at Aeolian Hall along with their good pals Pacanomad. For those that have never been, Aeolian Hall has Amazing acoustics and is an old style music hall.
      17. Hiroshima Hearts….Got Me Moving….the B side of the single. The covers aren’t finished yet, but the artwork is by local (soon to be legendary) artist Jeremy Bruneel!
      18. Hiroshima Hearts….Pistol….also from the Bone Music EP.
      19. 63 Monroe….Punk Rock Goalie…from the recent Jeff LP and they will be playing Saturday night at SOHO along with 44i and Running From Daylight and former Terminal Dave Clark’s band.
      20. B Girls….B Side….from their Who Says Girls Can’t Rock CD on OPM Records. B Girls have just released a vinyl LP on Bomp Records which features many of the songs from this CD. There is a London connection as Marcy Saddy was the drummer for most of the B Girls recordings.

Big Thanx to Andrew of Running From Daylight and Hiroshima Hearts, Jenn and Michael for coming live onair here on Radio WW!! Hope you listeners had as much fun as I did!

And a big thanx for all the phone calls, emails and facebook messages while onair!! Much appreciated!!

Radio What Wave Playlist August 18/2017

      1. Crankin’ With Elvis….Supreme Bagg Team….from Mr Garager’s Neighbourhood compilation from 1989 and the perfect way to start this show as Wednesday was the 40th anniversary of the death of The King.
      2. Elvis Presley….Heartbreak Hotel….live recording from 1956 and it gives you a bit of the idea of the craziness that surrounded any live performance by Elvis back then!
      3. Elvis Presley….Long Tall Sally…. As above.
      4. Elvis Presley….That’s All Right….Sun recording from January 1955. If it wasn’t for Elvis, Scotty Moore, Sam Phillips and Bill Black the world would have been a lot different musically and culturally! Teenagers flipped when they first heard Elvis!!
      5. Cowboy Project…. All Shook Up….local combo with Hayden Vialva (The Dice), Kevin Kardsley (The Kards) and others.
      6. Boy From Nowhere….King Creole….recorded live at Mortz’s according to the scrawl on the CD. Boy From Nowhere are still active and well worth checking out live if you ever get the chance! We’ve had them on Radio WW a couple of times for live to airs and each time has been a treat.
      7. Frank Ridsdale….Mystery Train….live recording from Radio WW 9/16/2010. Frank was a member of Uranus, the combo that was just inducted into the Jack Richardson London Music Hall of Fame this year! And he’s a member of The Stetson Brothers who gig around town quite a bit.
      8. Peter Singh….I’m on the Phone Elvis….1982 7” from the UK and the only Elvis tribute record by a Sikh I’ve ever seen! Lavender Sweep Records from the UK is currently working on a compilation of Peter Singh’s recordings and a possible documentary!
      9. Satan’s Cheerleaders with Vampira….Tribute To Elvis….1987 7” on the Living Eye Records imprint. Vampira is the actress who appeared in Plan 9 From Outer Space as well as some other flicks.
      10. Gun Club….For The Love Of Ivy…..from the Fire Of Love LP from 1981 with the classic refrain of “All dressed up like an Elvis from hell!!’  Remember reading about this record in NYRocker when it first came out and sounded like something that I would really dig!! Ran over to Records On Wheels (only record store in London that sold the punk/new wave records back then) and it’s been one of my fave records ever since! A few years later Gun Club played Mingles here in London, with Kid Congo on the git, Patricia Bagg on bass and not sure who drummed. It was packed, hot and sweaty and a fight broke out between some cat that does a show here on CHRW and Dougie Sinner that resulted in a bunch of people getting kicked out! Kid Congo was wearing a heavy black sweater with a huge skull on the front and someone from the crowd yelled, ‘Hey Kid, where’d you get the sweater?’ and Kid nonchalantly replied ‘my Mom knit if for me!’  There’s a coupla pics from this show in a long ago edition of What Wave zine. Jeffrey Lee Pierce came back to London a few years later to play at Bullwinkles, Deja Voodoo opened and this was the infamous wrestling on the dance floor show with some Legend Killers and others going at it. Jeffrey wasn’t very inspiring at this show, but Deja Voodoo sure got the wrestling going!
      11. Janice K….Teddy Bear….from Wave From The Grave, the cassette that came with What Wave zine #12 back in 1987. Janice became a famous Elvis interpreter, appearing on many television show, national magazines and even books!
      12. Pale Lips….Old Flame….from a brand new 7” from this all female combo outta Montreal.
      13. The Darts….Strange Days….from the soon to be released LP Me.ow, on Dirty Water Records out of the UK, but these gals are from LA and the west coast!
      14. Leadfoot Tea….Coronet Hemi….brand new 7” on Beluga Records out of Sweden and LT is a one man band.
      15. Bath Salts….Cool Like The Music….from their recent Mardi Gras CD and by request.
      16. Peter and the Wolves….Let Me See You Growl….from a live recording from this Calgary based rockabilly combo. They are scheduled for September 7th at the Richmond Hotel here in London.
      17. Pat Todd and the Rank Outsiders…Failure Is My Name….from a 7” on Beluga Records. Around this time I dedicated a set to Steve Bannon.
      18. 3 O’Clock Train….Stupid Little Angel….from the mid 80’s Wig Wam Beach LP. Singer Mack MacKenzie is scheduled for a live to air on next week’s edition of Radio WW. He will also be appearing locally at Fitzrays on Wednesday August 30th.
      19. Dave Rave…..Sweet American Music….from his latest LP, A Little Messed Up In Rock’n’Roll.
      20. Dany Laj and the Looks….Mr Screaming Attitude….from their latest release, Alive and Kicking and we sent this out to our pal Kerry Piper.
      21. The Judys….Genda Benda….from their self titled debut and from Vancouver.
      22. The Dahlmanns…..The Last Time….from their latest single on the Next Big Thing label out of Scotland and as they say on their website, ‘the best powerpop band on the planet’ and couldn’t agree more. This particular song was penned by Andy Shernoff and that’s  him  playing on it as well.
      23. Jill Porter….Just Ask….from her self titled CD and from 2005 and from Newfoundland.
      24. Scott Biram…..Judgement Day…..from the Something’s Wrong/We’re Lost CD and the start of a set to help me forget about the shit that’s going on in the world right now! Listen to the lyrics on this one and you’ll get where I’m coming from!  Scott is appearing at This Ain’t Hollywood on Monday night.
      25. Noble Savages….I Don’t Wanna Be a Boy No More….from the recent Trouble Brewing CD and from Hamilton Ontario. This CD was released by Transistor 66 Records out of Winnipeg.
      26. The Subhumans….Mindless Tough Guy Act….from the New Dark Age Parade from a few years back and this little ska number sums up a lot of the shit that is going on now. The Subhumans played London back in 1981 and it was one of their best shows on their first and only cross Canada tour back then. Years later they reformed and played at Call The Office, energy intact and politically astute as ever!
      27. Cardboard Brains….Babys Run My World….from the Last Pogo Lp that was recorded at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto for the last day of punk/new wave combos. The show was documented in a movie, and then later in a full blown doc on the Toronto/Hamilton punk scene in The Last Pogo Jumps Again. Recommended if you have any interest in the early punk scene from this area. We had Colin Brunton Director/producer as a guest on Radio WW a few years back.
      28. Drastic Measures…Big Town Boy….from their self titled Lp from 1980 and they also played at the above mentioned Last Pogo. Art rock, but the message is still there!
      29. Last Poets…..This Is Madness….from the LP of the same name and one of the first rap records to be released, circa 1970. Sums up a lot of the shit going down today.
      30. Last Poets….When The Revolution Comes….from their self titled LP and a double shot of the Last Poets that probably lost us a few listeners. For those that kept listening, hope you could decipher some of these lyrics and relate them to our situation.
      31. Fela Kuti….Zombie….from the Lp of the same name and from 1975. One of my fave Fela Kuti songs and again, the lyrics say it all in so few words! Fela’s son Seun made an appearance at Sun Fest here in London a few years back and absolutely killed it!! Dancing for over an  hour on solid concrete takes its toll on the body but worth every second!
      32. The Subhumans….I Got Religion….from the New Dark Age Parade Lp and had to play this as the next DJ was late arriving. Again, timely.

Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!

Back again next week with a live to air with Mack MacKenzie of 3 O’Clock Train fame!

      Untitled title

Radio What Wave Playlist August 25/2017. Live to Air with Mack MacKenzie

      1. Flying Squad….Fie On You….from Four Whom The Bell Tolls, the 7” EP that came with What Wave zine #16 ,  came out fall 1988. This was our first record and we learned a lot from the experience. This whole set goes out to Kerry Piper, drummer for Flying Squad, who is at home on the highway to recovery!!

      2. Flying Squad….Ronnies Raygun/Question Of Temperature….late 80’s demos and Ronnie’s Raygun appeared on the cassette Wave From The Grave #2 that came with What Wave zine #12 back in the spring of 1987.

      3. Flying Squad….Brian Mulroney…..early 90’s demo with Kerry Piper moved up to vocals.

      4. Flying Squad….Health Food…from the compilation LP Mr Garager’s Neighbourhood, came out in 1989 on the OG/What Wave label. This is the song that most remember Flying Squad for…a classic shot of guitar noise and attitude!

      5. Sonny Burgess….Red Headed Woman….from the Legendary Sun Sessions LP and Sonny’s best known song. Sonny passed away last weekend, one of the last of the original Sun Session crazies! Sonny and Conway Twitty came up to Canada on the advice of Rockin’ Ronnie Hawkins, Sonny stayed for part of a year before heading back to Memphis. Haven’t been able to find proof, but there’s a really good chance he played here in London back in 1960….Conway definitely did shows here in London, but he stayed in Canada much longer than Sonny.

Pat was in The Lazy Cowgirls for many years and remember going down to Call The Office to catch them, and they were stuck at the border trying to enter Canada. Radio What Wave Playlist September 15/2017   w/Mark Kearney As Special Guest

Mark Kearney, co-author of the book As The Years Go By was our special guest for the first half or so of the show. Mark talked about most of the bands from London that are in his (and partner Randy Ray’s) latest book. The book is just over 400 pages of info and stories on many of Canada’s forgotten bands/artists from over the last 60 years or so. It’s a great read for the throne room, as each listing only last a couple of pages. And available locally at Brown & Dickson or the University Book Store.

And near the end of the show, Dany Laj called in as Dany Laj and The Looks are in town tonight at Call The Office for a show.

      1. Uranus….Shake Some Action….from a live 1980 recording in Toronto. And we started the show by talking about Uranus, their hit and the fact the band made little money despite a hit in Canada.
      2. Uranus….You’re So Square…..from the 1980 7” and this one made #3 on the CKSL charts in May of 1980.
      3. Uranus….Tommy Get Your Gun….from their 1978 self released 7”.
      4. Uranus….I’m Wonderful….as above.
      5. Bluesmen Revue….Spin The Bottle….from their 1965 7” record on Columbia Records. Around this time we talked about Bluesmen Revue, how they won a battle of the bands contest, yet got none of the  promised prizes! Local man about town, Jim Chapman was a long time member of this combo.
      6. Thundermug….Africa….their top 10 single on AM radio back in 1973.  And right about here we talked about how Thundermug was the loudest band in London (and their rehearsal space) in Toronto.  One listener called in with a Thundermug request I didn’t have and said he saw the band about 40 times!
      7. Thundermug…..Duckworth Stomp….from the Ta-Daa LP from about 1975.
      8. Grant Smith…..Keep On Runnin’…..from a 7” record and around here we talked about Grant Smith and The Power who had this top selling record. One story that came out, was that when Grant was playing Las Vegas, he told Tom Jones (yep, that Welsh guy) to Fuck Off in front of a packed crowd! And right after this we talked about Truck, Gary and Dave and Priscilla Wright, all Londoners who have done, or are still doing wonderful musical things!!
      9. Grant Smith….Her Own Life….the flip side of the above single. It was a blast having Mark Kearney on the radio to talk about these London bands from the past. The reaction to the show was quite amazing, so we may bring Mark back at some future date to talk further about the history of Canadian music.
      10. The Hypnotics…..Radio City….from the Static Fuzz Radio LP from 2011. The Hypnotics are from Windsor Ontario, and they will be doing a live to air on next week’s show. And then later that eve, they play a show at the Richmond with Space Slave and Running From Daylight.
      11. The Hypnotics…..Can’t Stand It Anymore….from the Modern Art Entertainment CD from 2015.
      12. The Hypnotics….Our Generation….from the Static Fuzz Radio Lp.
      13. Hiroshima Hearts….Fool Me Twice…from the Bones EP and HH have their record release party at Aeolian Hall on Saturday night.
      14. Pacanomad…..Raspberry Jam….from their recent Take It Slow CD and they will be opening up for Hiroshima Hearts on Saturday.
      15. Dany Laj and the Looks…..Mr Screaming Attitude….from their recent Alive’n’Kicking CD and right about this time, Dany phoned in to talk about the show about to happen that night and what’s been going on in Dany Laj and the Looks world….ie opening for The Fleshtones, Teenage Head’s 40th Bash, Rubinoo’s and playing/recording with some of the kids of Cheap Trick members for starts!!
      16. Dany Laj and the Looks….Sweet Pretender….from the Alive’n’Kicking CD.
      17. Dany Laj and the Looks…..Small Town Kid….from the Word On The Street LP from a year or so ago.
      18. Steel River….Dream Is Country….from their 1970 LP, Weighin’ Heavy and we had to fade this one out due to time constraints.

Big Thanx to Mark Kearney for taking the time to drop by the studio and talk about his book. It’s a great read for all that are interested in the history of Canadian music. And a big Thanx to Dany Laj for taking the time to talk to us about the show happening tonight at Call The Office!

And Thanx for all the phone calls!!  There was a lot of interest in what we were talking about during this show judging by the number of calls that came in! And Thanx for all the emails, messages and Heys!!!

Next week, we have The Hypnotics playing live to air before they head down to the Richmond to play with Space Slave and Running From Daylight.
