How lame can Chicago be? I've been DJing somewhat regularly for close to a year, playing Garage and Garage-Punk nights in one extremely "hip" neighborhood and in one neighborhood known for the incredible numbers of people in search of nightlife. Strangely, I haven't made any friggin' progress in repeat audience members. The only people who compliment me on what I play (besides the two or three friends who show up in support) are usually the wait/kitchen staff, who never get to sit out and listen to the music for more than 5 minutes at a time.

I've tried flyering, MySpace, CraigsList, and anything I can with my limited budget. Anyone got any bright ideas on getting people to go to my garage DJ nights in a digital age?

Any suggestions for an intro to great girl groups? Thanks!

The majority of folks that leave comments for the podcasts, are other GaragePunk Podcasters!! No offense to y'all (the couple, or so) that do leave comments; but what gives? Is it too much of a pain? Do we need to make it simpler to leave feedback? Do you not care? Do you care, but believe that your comments don't matter much? Can't really be arsed? Been planning on getting around to it, but forget? Other reasons? As those great philosophers Tupelo Chain Sex axed: What is it?!

yup, very pop and psych... a little different from the garagepunk lockstep... I rilly rilly dig all that hook and melody driven stuff. Don't think the M&Ms did anything other than that single, but the tune's co-writer, Paul Collins had the Nerves (as in "Hangin On the Telephone") and then the Beat -- both classic and essential power pop. croatoa said:

Yeah The Gentleman Jesse LP is great. I'd go for The Pointed Sticks, Cheap Trick(mainly In Colour) , The Fevers, Statues(These guys are fuckin killer), The Pets, FM Knives, Big Star, The Funfuns(shameless self-promtion. www.myspace.com/thefunfuns) I dunno. I just like poppy punk stuff too.

Aw cool!! yer makin' my day! That M&M's song is really catchy, innit? it's been my earworm for days... Are you signed up to the garagepunk podcast mailing list? if so, you'll get that playlist tonight... but I'll tell ya right now, that first tune was from Gentleman Jesse - fuggin awesome band out of Atlanta that's happening right now. Wow, kudos to your finding that Kids record! its one of the hardest to find!! I suggests you listen to: The Quick, Rubinoos, 20/20, Nikki and the Corvettes (teen poppy female fronted), Milk n Cookies (rpm has an amazing collection of all their recordings if you don't manage to find the album), I consider the beat to be on the power pop side and its debateable whether or not you can consider the nerves power pop which i do! Hope that helps.. i will dig through my records for some great comps too.

Thanks. I did used to see Lord Floss quite a bit at the Modern Life club nights in Stockton. But I ain't seen him for a number of years now. I did contact Mike on MySpace who runs Castlegate Recording Studios where the 'Which Mask Today?' single was recorded at. Mike had this to say anout The Screaming Mad - "Now then, god this brings back memories. I remember the 2nd or 3rd time they recorded with me, I'd just finished setting everything up and was about to record when all three of them vanished and came back dressed up as monks! lol....apparently it helped them record, funny fuckers. Great lads, aint seen them since the late 90's. I have all their master recordings, I've kept everything I've done over the last 20 years. Great to hear from you to. Mike "

The Screaming Mad were a band from the North East of England fronted by Lord Floss. I remember seeing the band back in the late 90s supporting The Mourning After at a pub in Stockton-On-Tees. I'd just about forgotton about the band until the other week when I picked up a copy of their single 'Which Mask Today?' which came out on Dig The Fuzz Records. The record was pretty good in a early Pink Floyd/Syd Barrett kind of way. I was just wondering if this single was the bands only release? I've had a look on google but apart from the single all I can find is a mention of a forthcoming compilation album on Dig The Fuzz Records that was to feature a track by The Screaming Mad. Did this comp ever come out and is the Dig The Fuzz label still on the go?

I'm sure you guys noticed the debut of a new horror movie and creepy music podcast this week, Haunted Shack Theater with Uncle Yah-Yah, a.k.a. Haunted George, a.k.a. Steve Pallow of such bands as the Beguiled and the Necessary Evils. Steve's going to be filling in some of that gap left in the wake of the disappearance of Bob Noxious and his much-missed Snake Alley podcast.
