A couple of weeks ago on my COUNTRY show on our local public radio (I also do a more garagepunk-oriented freeform show there too) I got a call from this dildo bitching about the fact that one of the songs I'd played (Road Bound by Bob Wayne) said "fuck" three times.

I thought it was a friend of mine just goofing on me, so I told him, "Sorry. My Fuckometer is broke."  But he was not a friend and he was serious. I politely told him that the FCC only enforces obscenity rules between the hours of 6 am and 10 pm. That's true. It's to "protect the children." (MY show starts at 10 pm) But the douche bag still threatened to write the FCC.

I figure if I can offend just one asshole a night, I'm doing my job.

Your profil says you are from the Netherlands, and I believe they are even more liberal than Germany, which is where I currently live. Garage punk is generally far too tame to be censored here, I mean they are releasing pop songs in all their mucky glory here and because they are in English a lot of parents just pass on the swearing. In Britain nothing gets past the censors and I think it might be similar in America.

At the moment all over town are adverts for an Erotik Messe (porn convention) with a couple of stars on the poster with their nipples blacked out. I can't imagine a porn convention being so blatently advertised in Britain and as for blacking out the nipples, I think that was done more for effect seeing as a photo exhibition poster earlier showed full frontal male and female nudity.

I have heard though that there is a 'black list' that songs and music can be put on. I think Bushido has songs on it (violence and mysoginy) and Böse Önkels (racism). I don't know if that means that the bands just can't play the listed songs on air or if it has any other effects.

  It seems like record labels would post a warning for radio stations if any songs were of an "Offensive" nature , way back when.The most recent BIG controversy I remember was that of 2 Live Crew in The 90's. Personally , I did'nt care. We were still talking six , maybe seven digit returns at the end of the day. But , at the same time , you had people who knew their music was more than likely to offend , like GG Allin , and David Allan Coe's X- Rated LPs (He at least had the good sense to sell them privately.) before that.  

The late , great Cub Koda told me he saw a cassette tape in a truck stop with a song listed as "My Wife Ran Off With a N *****". He said he did'nt buy it , but , he could'nt believe how outrageous that sounded. "Hell" , I said , "I heard that on the RADIO , in Texas , when it came out.". (That's not the title , the title was a woman's name , and yes , there was an ironic , sorta -kinda - anti racist twist ending.). With the internet , now , there's so much material , I don't know who has the time to deal with all this , but , it WAS a big deal , from The FBI's unsuccessful attempt to prove "Louie , Louie" obscene to The MC5's (Clean version of)  "Kick Out The Jams" being pulled from the radio playlists as it climbed up the charts , because it was suddenly discovered the LP version had an "F - Bomb" , and John Sinclair's liner notes had several.  The Isley Bros.' "Fight The Power " contained the most annoying "BLEEEEEEEEP" EVER , IN PLACE OF THE WORD "Bullshit", on the radio version. So did Charlie Daniel's "Uneasy Rider" , Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue", and others . I think , thoughwith the popularity of REM , Nirvana , etc. , at least in Rock music , the trend was going toward unintelligible lyrical delivery , so , some songs could have contained all manner of "Dirty words" and still sold millions without any backlash. But , I don't know. Radio's so awful.

Mina , I can't think of any songs that were officially banned or censored , lately , but 20 years ago , and then some , it was still a big deal. oh and plenty of songs get censored by labels before they even reach the public.

no song should be banned. that's my opinion.

Have you checked out "Skullfuck" by UK band Walking Seeds on Probe Plus recs. I think this Lp fits into the whole Grunge thing & shows that it wasn't all coming out of Seattle, Si mon.

Do they do an online edition? I thought perhaps they were just print....

It is , but that's what I thought when I first heard Link Wray ,The Buzzcocks , of course , The Ramones , then , later still , The Stooges and even the monks and The 13th Floor Elevators in TV commercials. It has'nt changed my view on the music , and , if the artists are getting their due royalties , I'm all for it. It's a pretty sure - fired bet that Poison Ivy does'nt have a big , sweet retirement package to sit on (Though , of course , I hope she has yet to retire.) , so opportunities like these should'nt be scoffed at as "Sellouts" , unless the artist can afford to refuse them , in which case , they've probably already sold out , anyway.   I remember Jello Biafra bellyaching over the over - saturation of "Blitzkrieg Bop" in TV commercials , saying he does'nt know if he can ever listen to the song , again. Seems to me "Holiday in Cambodia" was in a Nike commercial , or something similarly reprehensible....Not that I blamed the monks for doing  it , not that I'd blame him , either.    But , really...... I think both " I Was a Teenage Werewolf " AND "I'm Cramped" are in separate ads. I heard one , I could swear , and saw the other....This is where the Advertising Industry is taking us , because we have younger people , some with hipper tastes , visualizing on TV , music that could'nt even get on late night radio in many markets , when it was new....Of course , if I'd got that Advertising degree I originally shot for , who knows? Might have happened sooner.

Someone in the advertising business obviously has real cool taste in music!!! Too bad there isn't an alternate version with the lyrics.

I think its hilarious that they chose "I'm Cramped " for a car commercial.... I like roomy cars.

1. Cramps....Weekend On Mars....from The Band That Time Forgot LP from Trash Is Neat. Limited to 250 copies and available to Cramps fanatics only, hence i have a copy. It's all live stuff, but the best of the boots, and this track featured Bryan Gregory from Club 57 in NYC, 8/18/79.

2. The Cynics...Baby What's Wrong...recorded live at Call The Office, London, Ontario 10/29/11. Best show i've seen The Cynics do since the 1990 tour with The Monomen. The Cynics were absolutely on fire here in London and we were lucky enough to be there to see the fury! Catch these guys live at all costs!

4. Paul Revere and The Raiders...Kicks...from a Greatest Hits LP. Last week we were playing bands that played here in London 30 years ago and Paul and the boys certainly qualify. Remember catching them at the Western Fair (10 day fair held annually here in London) and they were just amazing live! Lots of comedy, stories and those amazing songs that made these guys legends.

5. Higher State...It's Not Up To You...from the Freakout At The Gallery CD on 13 O'Clock Records. Brand new, just got it in the mail minutes before the show and had to play it! UK combo who have released many records, all with very authentic 60's sounds!

6. Cordcalling...When I Scream...from their debut CD and they are playing the Brunswick in St Thomas tonight.

7. Party Lights...Before You Came...from a brand new 7" from this trio of ladies from NYC. Features Anna Anabolic on guitar and vocals.

8. Photoroman...Faux Depart....from their only 7" and they are from Quebec.

9. Pack ad...Hear Me Out...from their latest LP Unpersons on Mint Records which is still #1 on the Exclaim chart!! And they are coming back to town Dec 16th with The Standstills at APK club.

10. Velvet Underground....promo from 1969 that may have aired on the radio once or twice. It's one of the 7" records in the VU singles 1966-1969 Boxset.

11. The Sphinxs...Time Above Me...from the split CD with Miesha and The Spanks. We had both of these bands (along with Pelt) for a show at The Black Shire Pub back in June...you shoulda been there!

22. Freddy Cannon...Talahassie Lassie...from his Explosive! LP. Freddy played The Western Fair here in London, probably about 30 years ago and he was amazing! Played all of the hits and made me smile! Then Chubby Checker came on and he wasn't very good so we left.

23. Arthur Alexander...Girl That Radiates That Charm....from his A Shot Of Rhythm and Soul LP on Ace Records that came out in the early 80's. Some of you may recognize this song as one that was covered by Teenage Head, original version came out in 1962. This whole LP is as good or better than the one track we played. Great early 60's soul sounds!

24. Gene Simmons....Goin' Back To Memphis...from the LP of the same name. 1962 recordings that still sound good and menacing all these years later.

25. Hipbone Slim and The Knee Tremblers...Square Guitar...from the CD of the same name from Dirty Water Records in the UK.

26. Light Bulb Alley....Long Time Coming...from The Sound OF Things LP on Ricochet Sound...had to fade this one out as we ran outta time.

Coincidence, I was going to mention them too. Saw Playn Jayn live and they were excellent, still listen to both LPs which are well worth picking up. They turn up fairly frequently on eBay and are never expensive.
