Theresa Kereakes To Show Punk Photography Retrospective At Metropolis Gallery

History Of '70s Punk Icons To Be Displayed

NOVEMBER 9, 2008 – Folks in the music industry love to throw around the phrase "back in the day" - a nod to how much more innovative and fresh and new things were at some undefinable point in the past. Few folks, however, can truly define "back in the day". Fewer still can claim to have been there.


Photographer Theresa Kereakes is one of those people. Kereakes' life took a fabled turn when she did the first photo shoot for a friend's new band. That band? Punk legends THE GERMS.

Shorty after that photo shoot, Kereakes became the default documenter of the Sunset Strip scene during the late '70s, photographing her close friends as they cumulatively wrote an important chapter in Rock History. The photographs of those friends - now icons and household names like IGGY POP, BLONDIE, JOAN JETT, BILLY IDOL, THE DEAD BOYS and more - have become the foremost collection of this classic, controversial time. As Theresa herself puts it, "I was there. See?"

Theresa's photos have been seen in Playboy, Rolling Stone, Trouser Press and Creem. Her album credits include THE GERMS "Forming" 7-inch, STIV BATORS, THE CHILDREN OF NUGGETS box set, THE DEAD BOYS, MARY WEISS of THE SHANGRI-LAS, and THE PANDORAS.

Theresa's many book credits faithfully show the significance of her classic '70s and '80s punk photos, and include the voluminous "Punk Turns 30," as well as many pieces in "Punk 365," "Bomp Records," "The Official Punk Rock Book Of Lists," The Debbie Harry biography "Platinum Blonde" and "Heebie Jeebies At CBGB's."

All of these images, and the stories they tell, come together in Theresa's monumental collection of rare and classic images from the punk rock heyday of the late '70s, entitled: "Unguarded Moments: Backstage And Beyond." On stage, off stage, at home, personal, and private - Theresa's true strength is showing us what others never could: that rare backstage-pass, an elite VIP invite to the after-show party and every rock 'n' roll fan's dream. Layered beneath the gloss and the grit is the truth behind fame: everybody has an unguarded moment where his or her innate humanity is revealed.

Just 2 batteries... the circuit inside is really simple. It has 2 germanium transisters. The Fuzz wont kick in unless you hit the strings quite hard. It is very weird but really sounds like the real deal. I don't use it live as it is so unpredictable. I'm quite keen to try one of those Boss Maestro emulators.... anyone tried one of those? It may use a Germanium Transistor which lots of the older Fuzz units used. The unit the Stones used on "Satisfaction" was a Gibson Maestro fuss pedal. Those are pretty easy circuits to copy.

For my Bass rig I'm running a EH Bass Big Muff. More usable then other Muff's, great on guitar and not just your average Muff because of the three way switch that switches between the modes.
On guitar I use a Fuzz Face clone that I made using high gain Germanium AC128's. I usually boost this with a tube Screamer type pedal for lead work/noise/feedback.

I've seen similar guitars with different brands on headstock. I think they were made in the Teisco factory but don't quote me on that. A lot of the different brands from that period used the same factory. I've never heard of the Domino brand but there are so many different ones that it's hard to keep track!
Those pickups are really cool, they can be quite microphonic, great for feedback solos!

The Saints...Stranded...ya, Lost Soul mentioned it as well. it's killer from top to bottom. The Vibrators....Pure Mania....so many songs and all good. Wire....Pink Flag.....like above Siouxsie and The Banshees....The Scream....killer guitar sound. Teenage Head....First Album....rockabilly on speed. The Cramps....Songs The Lord Taught Us....liked Psychedelic Jungle even more, but it's from 1981 X Ray Spex....Germ Free Adolescence....buzzsaw guitar all of The Ramones LP's within the time period. The Dead Boys....Young Loud and Snotty. The Pebbles compilation series....those records opened up a ton of doors for me....

Former Mothers of Invention drummer and "Indian of the Group" Jimmy Carl Black died of leukemia in Germany on Nov. 1. I knew him when he lived in New Mexico back in the '80s. He drummed on one of my songs back in '81. You can listen to a live show that pretty much sums them up, but it doesn't seem to be in the correct order for some reason. They were a pretty cool band and they opened for the Pistols when they played the Longhorn Ballroom during their infamous US tour.

From the Nathaniel Mayer's myspace page: R.I.P. Nathaniel Mayer 1944-2008 It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our dear friend Nathaniel Mayer. After many months of complications and illnesses following a series of strokes, Nathaniel left us November 1, 2008. He will always be in our hearts. As soon as funeral arrangements have been made we will post the information here. I had the great pleasure to enjoy his awesome gig at the Funtastic Dracula Carnival in Valencia, Spain, in 2005. I met him also during the weekend and he was a great, fun guy. He partied along as anyone else from the crowd. He'll be sadly missed. Love and affection (not the house of correction!)
