CHRIS , YOU GOT IT FOR YOUR birthday ? That's so cool. I had read about The Count Five in Jr. High (Middle School) and seen them , posed , in front of The Winchester Haunted House , with the insane exaggerated Brian Jones DO'S and Dracula capes . I loved Horror theatrics (Yes , I read about Lord Sutch around this time , too.) , and assumed maybe they were like a toned - down Alice Cooper or something.....But , being a wee small
BAIRN , i COULD'NT AFFORD RECORDS , UNLESS THEY WERE USED LPS FOR 50 CENTS AT THE PAWN SHOP... I saw a compilation , I think it was on Liberty (Of which Double - Shot WAS A SUBSIDARY ) , with "Psychotic Reaction" on it. I thought that was the trippiest name. I did'nt even know what it meant. But , I was'nt going to shell out half a dollar , out of curiosity ......But , I remember telling my Brother "Hey , I saw this old article about the original Punk Rock bands" ( 70's Punk was still happening at the time. The article was from your Story Of Pop.) He said , "Y'mean , like SLADE ?". I said , no , before them....I told him about the Count Five and their attire and everything , and he said , "That sounds IGNORANT AS HELL.".
It'd be a few years before I'd even hear "Psychotic Reaction" on the radio . Then , I realized , wow. This is a great song. I tried to imagine how it sounded to people , back then.
yEARS LATER , STILL , THERE WAS A GUY WITH A STALL AT THE FLEA MARKET i FREQUENTED . hE HAD ORIGINAL 50'S AND 60'S lpS , PLUS ALREADY - RARE REISSUES FROM EUROPE. I got "Psychotic Reaction" , the album ( On Line Records , in Germany).....for Christmas ! I know a lot of people don't like it , but , the album was remarkably consistent , considering they were'nt even old enough to buy beer , yet. A lot of their peers had two great songs , and FILLER. Their later singles were even better, I thought.
This flea market was so cool. One guy bought out the entire stock of a British record store , and opened a stall. Some of it was'nt so old. It was the first time I saw a Meteors record , which was only about 3 years old , then. Coolest thing was , they'd play the 'Girl Happy " soundtrack in the parking lot all the time. That's where I first heard "Do The Clam" !
Except "Pshycho" and "Louie Louie"! No? I didn't need to buy their LP.

I love garage and punk music, but every now and then I find that my taste doesn't jive with popular opinion -- meaning there's bands or records that everyone in the garagepunk community loves, but I just don't. Let's share our unpopular opinions.

Chris....in terms of "indie pop"...i gotta go with Helen Love
I'll go with that, I quite like both the Ramones & Helen Love. The Spice Girls ripped Helen Love off, with their appropriation of the "Girl Power" slogan. What else did the Bruddas Ramone influence?
So, this is pretty cool!
Someone posted this note on a blog after finding it inside a used copy of Rocket To Russia.
It originally appears to be simply a funny letter that went along with a birthday gift.
But a few things I notice:
It makes two mentions of "Superteem" in the letter....Darin Raffellis label in the mid 90's that also put out the first Donnas album and early 7'' singles.
At the bottom, it's signed "Allison R, July 26th, 1995". Could it be a birthday gift from Darin Raffelli to Donna A on her 16th birthday?
PRETTY FUCKING COOL! Although Donna A has some explaining to do!
Chris....in terms of "indie pop"...i gotta go with Helen Love
I recently heard the Reactions' "Talk Talk Talk Talk"! It's damn cool!

Regarding Canadian Punk of that era,
It seems like most of the best before 1980 was EP's and Singles, save for Teenage Head, and the Forgotten Rebels.
If we're gonna go before '76 though, Simply Saucer- Cyborgs Revisted is the best Proto punk from Canada.
Some fav Canadian songs are:
The Action- Downtown Boy
Bureaucrats- Grown Up Age
Viletones- Possibilities
K-Tels (aka Young Canadians)- Automan
Pointed Sticks- What do you want me to do
Da Slyme - Rocket in my Pocket
63 Monroe- Hi Jack Victim
Modernettes- Barbra
Rock'n'roll Bitches- Someone's gonna lose an Eye
The Fits- Bored of Education
That F.U.2 album RULES. That was re-issued last year by "1-2-3-4-GO!" records.
John, what you said about DMZ is so true. That album rules. Production ain't bad at all.
1. First 4 Ramones albums
2. Dictators- Go Girl Crazy ('75 but whatever)
3. Teenage Head- S/T
4. Saints (first two)
5. PACK- S/T
6. Real Kids- S/T
7. DMZ- S/T
8. Kids (first two)
9. Undertones- S/T
10. Boys- S/T
Honourable mentions: Lurkers first two, LAMF, Stiff Little Fingers first two, Gears- Rockin at Ground Zero, Ivy Green-S/T, Clash-S/T, Hubble Bubble- S/T.
Comps:
Pagans- Shit Street
Nervous Eaters- Eatervilel Vol 1
Real Kids- Grown Up Wrong (prefer this to the album actually)
Zeros- Don't Push Me Around
Black Flag- First Four Years
Thank you. It seems like it MIGHT have been legally reissued , recently , tho' I doubt it. I asked Don Craine if he thought the two F.U.2 records would be re- released , and he said , it's doubtful. In true exploitation fashion , they were paid a flat fee to record the albums , and did 'nt own the rights. Of course , a few songs turned up on Sect releases.

Great choice!
I have never seen Mosquito! Sounds like a Mystery Science Theatre thing! Is it? Sounds cool!
I’ve never seen What About Me! Love that song though. He did it with his Chinese Dragons band right? I know he re-recorded another version of it too for his “hop around” album in 2000.
Joey Ramone made a little appearance in the Canadian movie “hard core logo” in 1996. Also, Dee Dee was in the AWFUL ON PURPOSE movie “Bikini Bandits” . He played the Pope. Haha.

Tyler , Now , THAT one I've never heard of. Johnny was a great fan of Sci-Fi , but, I got the feeling , after "Rock'n'Roll High School" , he'd given up on acting or appearing in movies , at all......I'm sure this "Stranded " would have been seen by even fewer people than the "Car 54" movie , at the time.
D'yer ever see "Mosquito" ? It's a movie about , yep, giant mosquitos descending upon a camping community. It stars Gunnar Hansen and Ron Asheton , with a cameo by Margaret Dollrod. The only other thing about it I can recommend is that the animation/SFX for the giant mosquitos is actually pretty good.
The only other movie appearance I can think of , by one of The Ramones , was Dee Dee in "What About Me"(With Johnny Thunders , Jerry Nolan , Judy Carne and Jeanette Neapolitano - is that her name?- from Concrete Blonde , also the director. Excepting the latter , they all have pretty small parts.).
Dee Dee's song "What About Me " does'nt appear in the film , just like his song "Love Kills" was deep - sixed for an unrelated , inferior song by the same name , by Joe Strummer , in "Sid and Nancy".
Perhaps I should look into becoming a premium member is the new year. haha.
John Battles, I did not know that about car54! cool! For some reason I thought you were going to say that science fiction movie Johnny had an acting spot in called "Stranded".

Looks like a real winner! haha!
Sorry if this comes up twice. The Cramps were great fans of Bubblegum , too , when much of their audience would have been too old to remember it....
The first song they ever recorded , and , apparently , figured out at all , was "Quick Joey Small" by The Kasenetz- Katz Singing Orchestral Circus".
Lux Interior once said that he liked the early Talking Heads "When they sounded more like The 1910 Fruitgum Co.".
I agree. This is my favourite Dirtbombs album ever. Top 10 of the year for sure.

After persuading my parents to buy me a drumset as a present for my 13th b-day (a very difficult task to undertake, btw) i wanted to have a band of course and so my boyfriend, a good friend of mine and i, started to meet in my garage to make some music.. I can´t recall much about the names each of us proposed, i can just remember that one of my suggestions was to call us The Stillborn or Born Dead or something like this... (which pretty good reflected my gaiety at that time) ;D Anyway, making some covers did work pretty well first but than in the attempt to create some songs we were NEVER AGREED!! So i started to call ourself "The LITIGIOUS"!! and well....no need to say that this band didn´t last long! :D
Other band names I came up with included:
Urban Idiots (Good name for a festival, methinks)
Jesus Lenin
Ultimate Weapon
I'm making a lotof mistakes because I'm trying to wrap this up and go downstairs before a tornado arrives.....
tHE very EARLUY hEAVY mETAL , or Hard Rock , evolved out of teh kater Garage stuff , I believe. When it became all E cHORDS AND NO SENSE OF ROOTS IN THE 80'S , i DUNNO. Sme Garage bands in teh Us made a natural progression to HARD rOCK OR hEAVY pSYCH IN THE LATE 60'S - EARLY 70'S. oBVIOUSLY BANDS LIKE THE SONICS , SWAMP RATS , NOBODY'S CHILDREN , ETC. WERE HEAVIER THAN METAL COULD DREAM OF BEING.

OH , AND IF MY REPLY DID'NT TURN UP , CHRIS , NO , SHE WAS ONE OF MINE. THOUGHT SHE KNEW EVERYTHING JUST BECAUSE SHE HAD A COPY OF "VELVET TINMINE". BRAT . Not knocking that stuff , it just never went over that great when I was Deejaying "Glam Night".
Is it me or it a lot of the early heavy metal influenced by garage, like glam was?
Does anyone think GG Looks a lot like Lou Reed in this shot?
I think I've sorted the dups GJB... a glitchi in the sys... Hell yeah people wanna hear Shake Some Action! Wish I could have been at the 'secret' notsosecret Brooklyn Sunday show... and of course, the show with TFG and The Sonics. *sigh*
