There was lotsa great garage/psychedelic soul rock in Cambodia in the late '60s and early '70s. Much of it was destroyed after the evil Khmer Rouge took over in 1975. The records were smashed and burned and many of the top artists were killed or died in the labor camps. The stuff that survives is real lo-fi -- probably from third or fourth generation cassettes or whatever. The singer in this video is Ros Sereysothea There's a series of albums called Cambodian Rocks that's great. Same type of thing thing happened in Ethiopia in the '70s when the commies took over there. The Ethiopiques series has some great stuff that lots of us here might like. My favorite of the ones I've heard (there's 20 some CDs in the series so far) is Volume 8, SWINGING ADDIS.

First heard about the Group Inerane revolution after perusing "101 Uses For Ice Scrapers."

Brother Panti, You probably already heard of them, but i'll shoot it out there...Group Inerane. Here a description: Group Inerane is the now sound of the Tuareg Guitar Revolution sweeping across the Sahara Desert and inspired by the rebel musicians that started this music as a political weapon used to communicate from the Libyan Refugee camps in the 1980s and 1990s. Spearheaded by the enigmatic guitar hero Bibi Ahmed, Group Inerane has been together for several years and carries the rich tradition of Tamachek guitar songs for another generation. These ten tracks are a combination of amplified roots rock, blues, and folk in the local Tuareg styles at times entering into full-on electric guitar psychedelia. This music is performed with two electric guitars, a drum kit and a chorus of vocalists. The recordings were captured live in the city of Agadez in the Republic of Niger. Group Inerane was also featured in the Sublime Frequencies DVD “Niger: Magic and Ecstasy in the Sahel”. Recorded by Hisham Mayet, this is the second Sublime Frequencies Vinyl Release. 180 gram vinyl, full-color gatefold jacket, and limited one-time pressing of 1000 copies. It's for this reason that I don't limit my tastes to just a few genres. I can find at least one song I'll dig from ANY genre - even mainstream pop music, lol. As far as 60s style tunes, I'm big on the whole trash revival that evolved from the early psychobilly scene, and consider those bands underrated. THE VIBES (!!!!!), Russian Roulette (pick up the 'fuckin' car 7" if you're into the Cramps), Stingrays, etc. etc. Garage covers with an upright bass, fuck yeah! I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for them : ). PS, new G&R blows. Amen.

Well, we just did another episode of Sonic Nightmares which turned out a little on the dull side (due to the fact we were all burned out by another fantastic weekend in Bern). The music from Gringo Starr and myself was miserably above average garage music while Beat-Man and El Tiki sent some weird and wild stuff out into the Internet airwaves. But this discussion taught me to practice what I preach, so I'm surely gonna be playing some stranger tracks in the near future!

Whatwave Dave: Bloodshot Bill is damn cool stuff for sure, I think he's in the new Slowboat Film called The Folk Singer, a real cool film about modern men trying to sing their way through life, a MUST see!

brooklyn store and usa mailorder was stretching my work to 90 hrs/week and after paying my employees i was making $300 a month and that ain't worth the grind.

hamburg mailorder and store and distro is handled very ably by Dirk, so i can concentrate on all the mastering work for Norton in a comfortable spot in berlin and not get derailed by the constant distraction of the brooklyn store.

Mike Catalano (ex-Academy records, current Norton employee) will take over my remaining lease at the bkln store in late-feb or so and expand it, do mailorder of all kindsa stuff incl crypt crapola.

Hey PJ where is the Crypt shop in Hamburg? We'll be there at the weekend.

I'd like to hear it. I'm always searching out cool instros for my wife to add to her background muzak at her cafe. There's all kinds of forgotten instro gems by non instro bands, like the Masonics had a cool one on their SFTRI Lp that I liked and so on. Always liked Richie Valens's "Fast Freight". Looking forward to what you can throw at us.
