Not from the said period but I think the ultimate garage'n'roll bass you can get on the market is the epiphone Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane) - it changed the way I played (released in 1998 I think). It's modeled on the 1973 Les Paul Signature Bass which he used - a HOLLOW BODY instrument with SO MUCH CHARACTER!!!
It has this funny boost button you use like a monkey on some potent banana it's just discovered - for a week - and then you decide the basic "unboosted" sound is the ultimate rocker (it really is). It sounds so sixties but with an extra kick in the pickup, loads of sustain and no need to know how to use it much as it sings and crashes almost on its own - tends to show that even after 1968 some people knew how to build good instruments.
It's the sort of instrument that makes you think "I didn't find this bass that bass found me...". The price is decent as well though I've started breaking strings regularly since I've used it which turns out quite expensive - as I said it changed the way I play!!! I literally fuck with my bass on stage.
If you could miraculously have ANY piece of gear from 1960-1968, what would it be?
Call and make a request, leave a comment, tell me a joke, whatever! I might use it on an upcoming episode: 314-266-8472
And don't forget to check my blahg for the latest episodes!

I recommend a Big Muff or an Electro Harmonix Black Finger tube compressor. That way, you get a natural bass tone, but you can naturally overdrive it with the tube preamp in the compressor. Check it out.

I didn't figure many people would remember it, although it (banana-truffle) was pretty active back in the day. I wonder where a lot of those folks went.
Scion Garage Fest, Gonerfest, Budget Rock Fest, Ponderosa Stomp, Vegas Shakedown... those are all in the USA and just off the top of my head.
Just keep your eyes on this forum. Anytime there's a festival it usually gets discussed here in advance.
