Show #392: "Classical Masterpieces Gone Rock"

Every 3 weeks I leave an open slot to do random themes and whatnot. This week I'm featuring rock and pop music of the 1960's and 1970's that incorporated classical masterpiece works into their music. During the psychedelic and progressive rock era, lots of bands took rock to a higher level, many creating their own classical pieces of art, and often did their own arrangements of classical masterpieces from composers from Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Handel and many others. Tonight's show features some of my favorite classical masterpieces taken to a different level by rock groups to be heard and enjoyed by a whole different generation. Figured since they're a garage band this was the best joint to ask: Does anyone know anything about the Dandy Panthers? (what the musicians are doing now, contact info, etc.)

...all I've ever been able to dig up on 'em is this lousy last.fm page with their tune "Chester's Electric Orgy" (which is really want I'm after, be it on record or digital)...any leads, thanks in advance.

We got asked to do a guest mix stream for the folks over at the Get Bent webzine. Mostly punk & garage with a little indie rock tossed in for balance; had to show my local pride and kept it all to bands from the Pacific Northwest. Heavy focus on history, with classic garage & beat from The Ventures, Kingsmen, Wailers up through 80s & 90s punk from Poison Idea, The Gits and Bikini Kill. Lots of great smaller bands too, that only the locals would know. Check it out, we're pretty happy with how it turned out (except for the stupid half second gap their hosting service puts in between tracks).

Thanx Joanie, i´ve just discovered Skeletal Family and Play Dead.  i guess i´ve never heard them before. Better late than never! :)

Tuxedomoon were great! They use to live in Italy in the 80s, I´ve seen them many times live. :) Did someone mentioned Devo or the Residents? Important bands back then.

I saw Tuxedo Moon open for Bauhaus in London in 1980 (on Halloween).  Also saw a show there w/ Wasted Youth, Sex Gang Children and UK Decay.  Pretty cool. Not sure if anyone's mentioned Skeletal Family, an overlooked band from the era. And Play Dead.

Yep, I love goth too (Bauhaus live ´82? was simply fantastic!) but not only ... In general love most stuff from the 80s. It´s my time, my music and Kopper´s list could be my list too! In there i would add bands like Sonic Youth, Pere Ubu, Tuxedomoon, Pixies, the Sounds, Beasts of bourbon, Foetus, to mention very few more... 

One band who devastated me (about ´81) was Circus Mort, just 4 songs but WOW!!!!!!!!!! (I was also really impressed by their drums). Unfortunately i´ve never seen Circus Mort live just few years later, Swans (was great too:)

Very Cool! Love this raw DIY stuff. I have an old suitcase drum and snare set up I actually record with once in a while, not nearly as creative or original as this though, but it thuds.

Oh yea, also, to reply more specifically to the original post: It's not brand new, but the band, Cave, from Chicago are awesome. Their album NEVERENDLESS on Drag City is great, and they're super good live.

Lets see.... I went to the Redwood Bar near the end of summer and saw The Maxines (most recent is the the Drugstore 7")  and Magic Trash (The Way I'm Livin' 7" e.p.) It was a spectacular night with Wounded Lion headlining. 

And then like I tell everybody that'll listen, the Hideout Comps have never let me down.

Also, a band I've yet to see (I don't get out like I usedta could) but am very excited about is the Savage Gospel, a duo featuring Brian Waters (Flash Express, Countdowns) and Jorge from the Red Onions.

There's also "e.y.o.b." (Eat Yourself Out , Baby") by The Nip Drivers. It's actually a medley , of sorts , back to back with a hilarious (Tho' infinitely superior)modified cover version of "RIO' BY Duran Duran. POP - PUNK BEFORE IT SUCKED.........Both tracks , togethe r, could'nt be well above one minute.
