So Far So Good

  • Well, it’s now been nearly 2 months since Thee Strawberry Mynde decided to reform and create some garage mayhem once again. So I’ve decided to update everyone on what’s happening so far. First Tyme In 10 Years: The band had their fist rehearsal in 10 years on Wednesday 13th February at Lorne Street Studios in Middlesbrough. Must admit it was strange meeting up again after so long. Although since the band split up I had worked with Ian Lowes in both Afterglow and The Che Men. But I hadn’t played with Tall Paul since Thee Strawberry Mynde’s sell out gig at The Studio in Hartlepool way back in November 1998. Anyway, the 1st rehearsal seemed to go ok with us all trying to relearn the songs we had forgotton over tyme. Since then we have had another 4 rehearsals and the sound is getting back to how we remember, with some songs are even sounding better than they did 10 years ago! Something Old, Something New: From the old set we have started playing the Tall Paul originals ’The Difference’, ’She Sets The Scene’ & ’Word Girl’. Covers wise we still play ’Little Olive’ (The Electric Prunes), ’My Flash On You’ (Love) and ’Don’t Break My Laws’ (Thee Mighty Caesars). We have also just started working on a couple of other Tall Paul oldies ’You’ll Find Out’ and ’Journey Thru’ Tyme’. New stuff added to the set includes a great Tall Paul garage rocker called ’Hidden’ and covers of ’The Witch’ (The Sonics) and ’Can’t Don’t Want To’ (The Shambles). Tall Paul also has a few others newies of which ’Queen Of My Heart’ should be in the set soon. Gigs: We’ll be looking to play live soon. We’ve already been offered a couple of gigs although these came too early for the band. We are hoping to do a gig in Sheffield sometime later this year with The Mourning After and are also trying to get on the bill at this years Middlesbrough Music Live festival. We sent a demo into to Middlesbrough Music Live and they will be announcing which local bands are to play next Wednesday (9th April) with the festival taking place on Sunday 1st June. So fingers crossed for that. I played at the festival back in 2002 with my then band Afterglow and would love to play there again with Thee Strawberry Mynde. Recordings: After we get a few gigs under our belt we will be looking at going back in the studio to put a few tunes down on tape. We have already been asked to record our cover of The Shambles ’I Can’t Don’t Want To’ and have also been asked to record an Ed Ball song for a Times/Ed Ball tribute album. The original band recorded 4 songs at Oblivion Studios in Stockton-OnTees before we had even started gigging. This time round we won’t make that mistake as we want to make sure that the songs are really tight before we book a studio. So stay tuned for more news and may the fuzz be with you! Cheers, Bazza
