Oi! Punk etc. All the same moniker really. Just a reaction to the shit that was happening in Britain at the time. I believe the same shit was happening in New York and Detroit at the same time. Oi! was born of the skinhead/suedehead movement, and was more racially motivated. The skinheads came directly from the old punks who were totally disillusioned with the commercial crap that the clash and the pistols etc were eventually comin out with. So its all punk really. Like the hippy thing in the 50's and 60's, punk was'nt and is'nt a fashion thing, its a way of life and thinking
i think it was 'Clockwork orange' haha
what movie was that? Andy Climax said:
'A funny thing happened to me on the way to the forum', as the old movie title once said. This is a great wee place as we are all here not by accident but because of our love for all things punk, past and future. Facebook et al are worldwide platforms for the wonderful and the sad, this site i think is a wee bit more sublime than that. Theres no one-upmanship or point gaining, and yes i think we are all a bit 'Anorak', but only because we have a real passion for this kinda thing, to the extent that it transcends the music and art and then becomes a lifestyle choice. 'Art for Arts Sake' as one shitty Brittish band once lauded. Like the Muppets, we welcome all people here coz we know you live and love the same air we do. Zoe yer an absolute star. As King Jello Biafra once said, 'Keep it real, and be prepared!!!
Living Is the Best Revenge was a definite favorite of mine and 61/49 was quite a surprise for me as it was one for the best Romantics albums since the early 80s.
I saw Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I thought it was a really good movie, but I wish there'd been an extra half hour to it making it a little clearer.
I really need to catch up on the 2000's it looks like. I didn't even know about the Cynics album you mentioned.
I don't know. That's my least favorite record of theirs I think. For me, it's the first three(if you can find them) and the last three studio recordings. Where the Action Is was for me the best follow up to Don't Open Til Doomsday.
Outstanding record. Keeps the party rockin'.
Yeah, I've got that one. In fact, I think it was the first of theirs that I bought on CD. It's a good album, but not my favorite by them by a long shot.
I just bought a used copy on amazon, and I really like it. Once again, I have Little Steven to thank for turning me onto this album, albeit in an indirect manner. The Chesterfield Kings performed several songs from this album on their live Wicked Cool release, and I thought they were new songs that had not been recorded yet. I found out later on that they were on this album, so I tracked it down and bought it. I especially like "Rock'n'Roll Murder" and "Johnny Volume" (A very cool tribute to the late, great Johnny Thunders).
Yeah they can be hard to find in stores. If anybody is interested, you can get them here: http://www.deltamedia.com/pg_blank_audio_cassettes_new.html?id=vc448Hcz You can get different colors and whatever time you want, really cheap too. No this isn't an ad! Rockin Rod Strychnine said:
Unless I want to record over old cassettes, I can't even find tapes to record onto. The last two I have were bought three years ago and I'm using them for demos when I finally get around to it.

So it's basically a podcast then. Cool. Alex said:
Obviously not literal mixtapes. MP3 mixes. He's taken mixtapes into the 21st century. Anyway, any punk that doesn't know about his "Lux and Ivy's Favorites" series is really missing out. Go get all 14 volumes.

In the punk world, they never went away. Also it's the same impulse that kept vinyl going during the lean years. Plus they are dirt cheap. I prefer vinyl, but I still think there is something to cassettes. I can give a bunch of good reasons for using them. I started making them as a kid, and just never stopped. I drive an old car with a cassette player, so it makes sense for me to have some. They are great for people in poorer countries where not everybody has a computer or CD burner. Especially if you're in a band in a place like this, and need a really cheap way to distribute your songs. I'm always gonna support people listening and buying music in a physical way (cassette, vinyl, CD) over mp3s. Mp3s definitely have their place and are useful in a lot of ways, but I much prefer actually owning something and being able to hold the cover in the hand while I listen to it. Yeah it's kind of obnoxious to think about people being nostalgic about CDs someday once that format finally dies. But it's gonna happen, that's the way of the world. People usually feel that way about whatever they were doing/listening to as a kid or teenager. kopper said:
I dunno, I'm really having a hard time wrapping my head around this whole resurgence in the popularity of cassette tapes. It leans ominously close to the hipster ironic-nostalgia thing... but then, I'm old and grumpy most of the time, so... you know...
I just can't wait until people get nostalgic about CDs... ;)

Fuck yeah! Welcome back to the... airwaves? Tubes? Whatever, listening now!
Good to have you back podcasting!
For what its worth, Danelectro makes the 'Spring King', real spring reverb for around $150.00, it'll even crash waves when you kick it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGgEwpzeOHE Johnny Danger said:
I'm thinking a fender tank, though I'm not too snobby to try a pedal.
I just got me that Boss FRV-1 'tank' pedal ... I really dig how it sounds and it's really cheap. It'll probably take me years to get around to saving/building a real tank and this'll definately tide me over.
Good decision, this thread looked like the musical version of an online suicide.
Well said....I after a couple of sleepless nights and another tour through my records, brought me back to London and LA (the places where I have bought most of my records)...and yes...I will keep them...even if...maybe one day thank you all for your ideas and help Peter Doc Sanchez said:
Man, keep them!!! I've got records I haven't listened to in twenty years, and just last night I became nostalgic, pulled out some old LPs I would have sold long ago if I would sell my old records and had such a great time. I could've listened to all the songs on youtube or whatever, but hell, the old dog-ears on the innersleeve! The worn-out cover! And I have only twelve square meters in my living room, and have been in financial trouble more than once. It's worth keeping your collection!
Cheers, Doc Sanchez
