Dreamy, psychy and sad, like a big-eyed waif… or a really beat-to-hell Dixiegrrl—crawling back from SXSW, but back in love with records after a week of rock ‘n’ roll spring break. What happens in Austin stays in Austin, but still I brung home some fine shows from The Drones and Dex & Sara Romweber, a rare peek at Charlie Pickett live, and an account of how the pop Swiss Choo Choo that could slice through the grit and grimey sounds from Aaarght!! Down Under. All that and more during our Three Hour Tour “On The River in ’59″ and back home again on that “Lonesome Train.” I saw spirits rise from guitars, and this is the best I can play ya!
The Untold Fables were Paul Carey on voice, Jon Niederbrach on guitar, Robert Butler (later of The Miracle Workers) on bass and Paul Sakry on drums. Although The Fables were mainly associated with the mid-’80s L.A. psychedelic/garage revival scene that grew out of a club called the Rave Up and later moved to Greg Shaw’s Cavern Club, their music also included strong influences from ’70s punk and ’50s rhythm & blues. Their first release, a remake of “I Try” by the Young Tyrants, was for Voxx Records‘ Battle of the Garages, Volume 3 (which is now available on the Battle of the Garages Part Two CD). In the spring of 1985 they recorded their first LP, Every Mother’s Nightmare, for Lee Joseph’s Dionysus Records at West Beach Studios in Los Angeles. Lee Joseph produced it with a lot of input from Robert Butler and sound engineering by Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion). The album was finally released about a year later. In the summer of 1986 and spring of 1987 the Fables had two more recording sessions, this time at South Coast Studios in Santa Ana with David Carey producing. Eleven songs from these session were later compiled for their second LP, Aesop’s Apocalypse, released in early 1989, about a year after the band split up.
Releases:
LPs: Every Mother’s Nightmare (Dionysus ID8603/1985), Aesop’s Apocalypse (Dionysus ID123312/1989)
7″s: Wendylyn EP (Dionysus ID073301/1987), Spit the Winkle EP (Mystery Scene MS 006/1987)
Comps: “I Try” – Battle of the Garages Vol. III LP (Voxx VXS 200.029/1984), “Watch Your Step Woman” – Dimensions of Sound LP (Mystery Scene MS 1001/1987), “Pressure” – Sounds of Now! LP (Dionysus ID123305/1987), “Happy Motoring”/”Nobody Spoils My Fun” – What Stuff LP (Iloki IL1011/1990)

The Penetrators – Live at Louie’s in Kalamazoo, MI (9/20/08)
This one hasn’t been in the “vaults” too long, obviously. It’s just a few months old… recorded at the UFO Dictator Fest in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on September 20, 2008. The band features Jack and Spike, the two original members who have kept the band going all of these years, plus a couple members of MESA and the Throbbin Urges (both have records out on UFO Dictator Records).
Wrapping up the year in a bear rug and a batch of faves from 2008 including Mike and the Ravens, Charlie Pickett, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, the Tough and Lovely, Glitterhouse, Thee Vicars… why, listen fer yerself! Happy New Year and cha cha cha!
On this episode of State of Mynd, Nick closes the year with a show that’s sure to satisfy your ’60s garage and psychedelic needs. You’ll hear classic tunes by The Lyrics, The Ugly Ducklings, Us Too, Shag, Pussy and many more in over an hour of pure entertainment that would please any garage fan or homicidal Santa Claus alike.
Dixie welcomes special woohoo guests, Vikki V. and Suzy Q. of Fringe Factory, the monthly mod-psych night on the last Saturday of the month at the Highland Ballroom in Atlanta, GA. The ladies come bearing psychedelic bonbons that are sure to please and confound…
On this episode Nick digs up some rarely heard live recordings from the ’60s. You’ll hear The Pretty Things in Amsterdam in ’69 as well as The Twilights and Easybeats from Festival Hall in Melbourne in ’67. It’s a steep contrast with an audience of stoned hippies to a horde of screaming girls. The burning question in Nick’s mind, though, is would you dig to see future episodes featuring more live stuff? Let him know!
Ushered in by a Psychedelic Excursion, Charlie Pickett rocks the porch with a tune from the hotly anticipated Bar Band Americanus on Bloodshot. More Dixie love for the Finkers, High Caliber, Mercyland, Professor Morrison’s Lollipop… a special shout out to the the Thnderbolts…. teach a man to fish, and he’ll have fish for life… uh-huh, you know that’s right! more popster fun with the Scruffs, Flamin Groovies, and a sweet resolution with James “Sugar Boy” Crawford… mercy, mercy me!
Here’s Alessandro with a one-shot Brazilian-only special on the GaragePunk Podcast Network. Keep in mind that this is Alessandro’s very first attempt at podcasting. He joined the Hideout recently and commented on my page about Brazilian garage-punk bands. I replied with “How about putting together a podcast on Brazilian garage bands yourself?” And he did! I dug it so much that I suggested he do a regular show for us, but one that featured more than just Brazilian bands… but time will tell if he ever actually gets around to doing that. If he does, it should be some pretty cool stuff, most of which you’ll never get a chance to hear anywhere else, and that’s the really important thing. It’s rare that the rest of the world gets to hear much in the form of trashy rock’n'roll from Central and South America, as North American and European bands have so dominated the world of garage and primitive rock’n'roll over the years. Anyway, enjoy this show, and hopefully Alessandro will be submitting more episodes in the future.
Just when you thought this show was long dead and buried, Nick is back with an episode featuring bands from ’60s Australia! It’s a completely new followup to his first installment featuring Oz on episode 4. You’ll hear the sounds of some classic songs as well as lesser-known gems by the likes of The Twilights, Black Diamonds, Valentines, Purple Hearts, Steve and the Board and many more!
Whew! After a set of misadventures, not to mention a little hot pants for his romance, courtesy the M+M’s, Gretchen finally serves up a power pop repast. As summer fades into fall, wrap yer ears around brand-new Gentleman Jesse, Australia’s Finkers, the Fans outta ATL, Josh Fix, Protex, Shake Shackers, the Pop, and even more! Also listen up for a Charlie Pickett track that’s NOT on his forthcoming Bloodshot retrospective, Bar Band Americanus, as well as even more from Mike & the Ravens, Noisy Boys, and something else from that hottie Fabienne Delsol. And for god’s sake! Don’t fergit yer skinny tie! Cha cha cha!
Rare live Velvet Underground, a Mike & the Ravens bonanza including a smattering of tracks from their brand new album Noisy Boys as well as a nice and fuzzy recording all the way from Rollerland itself! Oh, wait, did I mention, live Charlie Pickett and the Eggs, too? yep, from the Eggs’ last ever show in 1985, and filling in, a load of the most de-lish musical mortar I ever come across! Selmanaires, Pinkees, and more!
ROLLER ROLLER ROLLERLAND! At last! MIKE AND THE RAVENS have recorded the retro anthem made famous by the likes of the Twilighters and the Untamed Youth, losing out on the legacy they’ve deserved all along… and you can hear it right up front on this here episode of Hanging on for Mercy! In fact, celebrating two years of Mercy! Oh, what a nice way to turn two! So much going on in this show… The Reigning Sound, the Woggles, Flat Duo Jets, the Smoke, Fabienne Delsol, Vashti Bunyan… uh-huh, them two some cute biscuits to help get yer ye-ye on! … And did I say, WORLDWIDE DEBUT of Mike and the Ravens ROLLERLAND? Hmm, ya say a little dixie bird told ya? Ahem, keep yer ears pinned, cuz there’s lots more Ravens coming down the pike this summer and fall.
