Songs the Lyres Taught Us, Vol. 1

A collection of vintage ’60s nuggets covered by Boston’s longest-running garage band, the Lyres, led by Jeff “Monoman” Conolly. A couple of these date back to Jeff’s days in the legendary DMZ, but all of ‘em have been heard at one time or another at various Lyres shows dating back to 1979.

This episode was inspired by Crypt’s boss Lyres comp “The Early Years,” which if you ain’t got, you need to get.

Presented in mono, of course.

Also, if you’d like to hear a couple of vintage live Lyres concerts presented in their entirety in podcast form, click here and here!

Some podcasts just hit you square in the jaw a little harder than others – the latest Mal Thursday show is his best compilation since one of my all-time garagepunk favorites – The Florida Fuzz Fest (a.ka. Fl. Rocks again #22).

Glad this is still up to re-listen since you just posted Vol. 2. Some of this stuff doesn’t sound like the lyres at all. Then again it is all covers.

    Dear Mal:
I have been a fan of the Lyres since 1980. I’m glad that you are keeping the flame alive. No one archives old r’n'r like Jeff. Also, no one other than Iggy could give such a dynamic performance. I wish that he would reform the band and come to Pittsburgh, where I live now.

My favorite song is “Don’t Give It Up Now”

    Yours truly,
    the One Wendell

I’ll 2nd Micheal’s wish I was lucky enough to have seen them in NY at “Cave Stomp” but I want more and there is no better band live than the Lyres.
