Hanging on for Mercy #24

Hanging on for Mercy

Host: Dixiegrrl

To get to that rare Tennalaga side from the Expressions, you gotta wade through these Rainy Daze. After an initial burst of energy, HOFM #24 succumbs to the hot and humid Georgia summer with cicada-buzzy guitars and languid psych dreams. Larry and The Blue Notes, Out With Mummy, Billy Childish, Jay Stutes, Paragons, Plasticland, High Dials, and the Hope… uh-huh… why don’t you just come on over and sit a spell? You ain’t going nowhere as long as this rain shower lasts… mercy mercy, me.

Keep Smiling!

2007-07-26

Lately I’ve been trying to figure out why the GaragePunk Podcast hasn’t gotten listed in the iTunes Podcast Directory like it was, oh, maybe a year ago or whatever. The podcast used to get a lot of exposure and literally hundreds of new subscribers due to that listing, and I wanted to find out why we weren’t listed any longer, so I went on Apple’s website and dug into the Podcast Technical Specification page, where I read the following (I’m pretty sure that by “iTunes Home Page,” they mean the Podcast Directory):

Getting Featured on the iTunes Home Page

At iTunes, we’re constantly on the lookout for podcasts that are breaking new ground with this medium, have new or unusual content, or just capture our interest. When we find them, we like to feature them on the Podcasts home page. While there are no sure-fire ways to get your podcast featured (and no, we do not accept payments for promotion), there are some minimum requirements. To be featured by iTunes, podcasts must have:

  1. An attractive, original image that does not include the iPod (emphasis mine) or other Apple-branded content. For image specs, see the iTunes Image section below.
  2. A robust and accurate description.
  3. Proper language, category, and explicit tagging.

In addition, featured podcasts must be regularly updated with new episodes. We occasionally feature a podcast after its first episode, but we generally like to see podcasts with at least 3 episodes, and we like to see that the most recent episode has been added in the past month. Ideally, the episodes should be released on a regular and predictable basis. More than 100 podcasts are submitted every day, so it is impossible to feature all of the good ones.

D’oh! So that’s why our podcast hasn’t been featured in the Podcast Directory lately… OK, so I grabbed some goofy clipart books at work and started flipping through them looking for something–ANYTHING–to replace that iPod with, and I found this goofy dog caricature with “KEEP SMILING” in big bold letters beneath it. So I scanned it in and stuck that dog face where the iPod used to be and added it to our RSS feed, and I think the combination of the dog with his tongue hanging out, dangling over the old logo’s juicy crossbones kinda works. I dunno why… something to do with giving dogs bones to chew on or something, I guess. Go figure…

KEEP SMILING!

Anyway, I guess we’ll wait and see if it works.

Savage Kick #37

2007-07-19

Savage Kick

What goes on in a large, sub-cellar room illuminated by flickering lanterns on a sultry summer night in St. Louie? Why, only the mad creation of a new episode of Savage Kick, of course, the hard and relentless fight of one man against the forces of evil (bland, uninspired mainstream corporate rock, natch). Tune in this time to hear sonic rumblings from artists like the Oblivians, Mark Sultan, Holly Golightly, The Third Bardo, The Greenhornes, The Rip Offs, The Count Five, The 5.6.7.8′s, The Red Crayola, The Woggles, The Electric Prunes, the Pagans, Dean Carter, The Hipshakes, The Dirtbombs and more. A group of tough-looking men will see to it that you listen and cooperate. Enjoy.

Rock’n'Roll Suicide #35

2007-07-18

RocknRoll Suicide

Host: R. Fink

R. Fink is back with another rock ‘em, sock ‘em, kick-ass stack of wax in this edition, number 35, of Rock’n'Roll Suicide. Twist to the now sounds of the Final Solutions, the Tuff Bananas, Off With Their Heads and the Surfites. Jerk with selections from the GaragePunk.com comp. “Party Time” and do “The Mouse” with local heroes, the Screaming Shambles, as they do (as best as I can tell) the un-comped smash, “House of the Rising Mouse.” Here are some thoughts on the tune from onetime Shamble, Harry Hepcat…

“‘House of the Rising Mouse’ was done at a really big studio. It was on a small label (Sonic) and we were all set to do the tune on Soupy Sales’ TV show. He used to do a dance he called ‘The Mouse,’ but there was no record about the dance. At the last minute, he decided to record his own ‘mouse’ tune. Thus, we didn’t appear. I like ours better.”

So grab this podcast, check out the action and go baby go!

Mystery Action #12

2007-07-11

Mystery Action

Host: Charles Gaskins

It’s summer time in New York, man. You know what that means? It means BBQs on the roof, a 75% chance of ass rash, girls walking around with hardly anything on, and the need for FUN MUSIC! Beat the heat by listening to this in the roaring hot sun. Buy a bottle of Country Club Orange Soda, eat a pack of Rap Snacks, and take a seat on your front steps to watch sweaty dudes in short shorts cruise by on rollerblades and chubby girls with no bras on bounce as they jog around the block. It makes me almost miss the winter.

Out of the Vaults, Into Your Ears #17

2007-07-06

Out of the Vaults, Into Your Ears

The Humpers – Live in St. Louis (February 25, 1996)

Thanks to Jim Utz for this soundboard recording of The Humpers live at Cicero’s basement bar, Feb. 25, 1996… The band had just been to town about seven months earlier, but on their second trip through they packed a lot more punch, played a lot tighter, had a more energetic set, and the crowd definitely responded better, so all-in-all considered, I thought this was the better of the two sets, and is presented here as part of the Out of the Vaults series (the first new episode in over four months). Enjoy!

Savage Kick #36

This ain’t Little Steven’s Underground Garage, no siree… I hit the mic after a long day of kickin’ it poolside and partaking of some fireworks wars on the 4th of July to present over an hour’s worth of firecracker-hot garage, punk, and primitive rock’n'roll. Dig the sounds of Screaming Lord Sutch, Andre Williams, The Countbackwurds, The Hentchmen, King Louie and The Loose Diamonds, Black Tie Revue, The Cynics, The Touch-Me-Nots, The Tranzmitors, Ape City R&B, Digital Leather, Lover! and two sets of girl garage favorites, old and new. Another pistol-packin’ show, crammed full of savage rock’n'roll. Enjoy…

The Desperate Hour

Host: Alex Piandes

For the 8th episode of The Desperate Hour, Alex pays tribute to Joe Meek—even though he doesn’t actually articulate the tribute—and plays ’80s garage nuggets from The Tryfles, The Beguiled, The Lee Harvey Oswald Band and Lyres as well as the usual ’60s-centric slop and schlock.
